LianTronics VMQ Series LED module and cabinet
LianTronics' VMQ series is a flip-chip COB fine-pitch LED display family using MiniLED chips, with a pixel pitch range between 1.2 mm and 2.5 mm. According to the manufacturer, the COB construction provides higher contrast, more lifelike picture quality and better reliability than the traditional SMD solution, because the LED chips are not in individual packages but bonded directly onto the panel and sealed with a protective layer.
The cabinet measures 640×480 mm and weighs 7.5 kg, with a brightness of 500-600 nit depending on the pixel pitch and a refresh rate of 3840 Hz. The resolution varies between 512×384 pixels (1.2 mm) and 256×192 pixels (2.5 mm) according to the chosen pitch.
A key feature of the series is complete front servicing: the LED modules can be replaced from the face of the display, without rear access, which simplifies maintenance on installations where there is no free space behind the wall.
Where the VMQ Series sits in an LED wall system
The VMQ's 640×480 mm cabinet sits on a wall rail or a frame, and all servicing works from the front, so no space is needed behind the wall — this is what justifies the product on control room and studio walls mounted on solid walls. Port count: at P1.2, 512×384 = 196 608 pixels, so three cabinets run on one gigabit port (0.92 m²); at P2.5, 256×192 = 49 152, giving 13 cabinets and 4 m². A 10 m² P1.2 control room wall is 33 cabinets and 11 ports — it needs a sender at MX40 Pro or Colorlight X16 Pro level.
WHEN IT IS THE RIGHT CHOICE
Recommended for indoor installations with no access behind the wall (a studio, a control room, a meeting room), where a fine pixel pitch and maintenance from the front alone matter.
WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR
The official product page gives no IP rating and no exact power consumption figure (W/m²); these are worth requesting directly from the manufacturer before purchase.
The VMQ Series in practice
With COB the surface is a continuous protective layer, so it can be wiped down and no LED can be knocked out of it — in exchange there is no individual pixel repair, and in the event of a fault the module is replaced. The manufacturer gives no IP rating, so it can only be taken into a wet or dusty space (a swimming pool, an industrial hall) with written confirmation from the manufacturer. During installation, the 640×480 cabinet size means the wall dimensions have to be designed to this grid, because it cannot be mixed with the usual 500 mm raster. Plane tolerance is 0.3 mm. Module replacement is from the front, magnetically; the calibration data stays on the receiving card, so a replaced module calls for re-measurement. In a control room, where the wall runs 24/7, 3% spare modules and a spare power supply are justified.
Alternatives to the VMQ Series
If a 500 mm cabinet grid is required (because of an extension to an existing wall, for instance), the Unilumin UMiniIII Pro or the ROE Visual Ruby fits better. Below 1 mm, the Absen KLCOB V2 is the option. If the power supplies have to go into a rack and only the panel may remain at the wall, the Leyard DirectLight is the tool for the job. For a large surface with fewer seams, the Leyard TWA. For events, the COB rental cabinet is the LEDMAN JS Series.
