Absen PL V3 Series LED module and cabinet
The PL V3 series is Absen's event technology (rental) LED wall platform, developed primarily for stage and touring use. The cabinet is made of cast magnesium with a two-layer structure: the 500×1000×88 mm panel is only 12 kg apiece, and the 500×500×88 mm version 7 kg apiece, which allows light transport and quick, one-person installation. Picture quality is provided by true black-face LEDs, 16-bit grayscale and a 7 680 Hz refresh rate, and on the PL3.9 Pro V3 model the brightness can be switched between up to 5000 nit (outdoor) and 1500 nit (indoor) with a single setting.
An important distinction is that the PL V3 is not the same as a permanently installed, building-mounted outdoor LED wall. Permanent outdoor cabinets typically hold an IP65 dust and water resistance certification, because they have to work unattended for years in all weather conditions. Event technology outdoor cabinets like the PL V3, by contrast, are made primarily for temporary, supervised installation: the emphasis is on quick rigging and de-rigging, high brightness and ruggedness, not on a waterproofing certificate — no specific IP rating appears on the official product page either.
Servicing is done from the rear, without tools: the integrated power supply, receiving card and hub board can be lifted out as a single unit, secured with safety cables. The panels connect with magnetic quick locks and an automatic release system, and can be curved between -7.5° and +10°.
Where the PL V3 Series sits in an LED wall system
The signal path arrives from the player through the sending controller over Cat6 into the cabinet, where the receiving card and the hub board form a single removable block with the power supply built into the frame — the cabinet is therefore not only a mechanical but also an electrical assembly unit. A 500×500 mm P3.9 cabinet is 128×128, that is 16 384 pixels: around 39 cabinets per gigabit port, roughly 10 m² of wall on one port; 19 of the 500×1000 version. The 16-bit grayscale and the 7 680 Hz call for a controller in the NovaStar MX40 Pro or VX1000 class on the sending side, not an MCTRL300 with its eight bits and 1.3 million pixels.
WHEN IT IS THE RIGHT CHOICE
On outdoor and indoor stages for tours, concerts and corporate events, where quick rigging and de-rigging, high load capacity and high brightness are required.
WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR
No specific IP rating is stated on the official datasheet — for permanent, unattended outdoor installation, a permanent outdoor cabinet with an IP65 certification is the better recommendation.
The PL V3 Series in practice
The wall is built from the bottom up: once the first row is set level and flat, every further cabinet is aligned to it, and the step between neighbouring cabinets has to stay under 0.3–0.5 mm, otherwise the seam shows as a line in raking light. The magnetic side lock pulls the panels together, but it does not set the plane for you. The -7.5°/+10° curving is a fixed detent position, and the radius of the curve has to be matched to it at the design stage. Module replacement is done from the rear, without tools, in a few minutes per cabinet; the calibration coefficients, however, sit on the receiving card, so a replaced module has to be re-measured with NovaCLB, otherwise it stands out in colour. For a tour, 2–5% spare modules and a spare power supply are taken along, and the cabinets travel in the factory transport frame (dolly).
Alternatives to the PL V3 Series
If a finer pixel pitch is needed, the sister Absen Polaris V2 (PL V2) starts from 1.9 mm with the same 500 mm module grid; below 1 mm the KLCOB V2 is the option. For permanent, unattended outdoor installation the IP65-rated Absen AW Series is the right choice, because the PL V3 has no IP rating. For outdoor rental, the Gloshine CB MAX (IP65 at the front) works with a 1000×1000 cabinet. On a tighter budget, the Chipshow C-Rock Indoor and the Esdlumen Pilot Pro offer a similar rental cabinet size.
