Absen KLCOB V2 / KLCOB Pro V2 Series LED module and cabinet

The three main manufacturing technologies for LED displays are known as SMD, COB and GOB, and they solve the question of how the tiny LED chip gets onto the panel in fundamentally different ways. In SMD (Surface-Mounted Device) technology, individually packaged LEDs are soldered onto the panel one by one — the most widespread method, but the packaging sets a physical lower limit on how fine a pixel pitch can be achieved with it, and the chips protrude from the surface, which makes them more sensitive to impact and moisture. COB (Chip-on-Board), by contrast, bonds the bare LED chips directly onto the panel's circuit board and then covers the whole thing with a protective coating — there are no individual packages, and the chips sit recessed into the surface. This allows an extremely fine pixel pitch and better impact resistance, and because the chips do not protrude, it gives a less vulnerable surface that is easier to clean. GOB (Glue-on-Board) is really a supplementary process rather than a chip technology in its own right: the surface of a panel populated with SMD (more rarely COB) LEDs is coated with a transparent epoxy/silicone layer, which provides water resistance, impact resistance and better heat dissipation, in exchange for a minimal possible reduction in brightness and more difficult repair of individual LEDs.

The KLCOB V2 series is Absen's full flip-chip COB micro LED product, with a pixel pitch of 0.93 mm and 1.25 mm (the combined KLCOB V2 / KLCOB Pro V2 range covers 0.78-1.87 mm according to the official product summary). The base KLCOB V2 gives 800 nit and the KLCOB Pro V2 1000 nit of brightness, both at a 7 680 Hz refresh rate. The manufacturer applies a custom black polymer coating to the panel surface, which results in deeper blacks and better contrast, and reduces heat generation with flip-chip and common cathode technology.

The panels are built up from small 150×337.5 mm units, can be ordered in 2-in-1, 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 configurations, and can be curved with an internal arc of up to 3°, at a minimum radius of 2.87 metres.

Where the KLCOB V2 / KLCOB Pro V2 Series sits in an LED wall system

With COB, the cabinet is built from 150×337.5 mm modules in a 2-, 3- or 4-in-1 layout, with the power supply and receiving card behind it. Pixel density is the bottleneck here: a 600×337.5 mm P0.9375 cabinet is 640×360 = 230 400 pixels, so at most two fit on one gigabit port — roughly half a square metre of wall. A 4K (3 840×2 160 = 8.3 million pixel) surface therefore requires 13 gigabit ports: that is NovaStar MX40 Pro (20 ports) or Colorlight X16 Pro (16 ports) level, and cannot be achieved with a VX1000 (10 ports, 6.5 million px).

WHEN IT IS THE RIGHT CHOICE

For premium indoor control rooms, showrooms and conference rooms, where an extremely fine pixel pitch, deep blacks and the option of a curved installation are important considerations.

WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR

The official page gave no specific grayscale bit depth or contrast ratio for the KLCOB V2, so we do not state them as unconfirmed data.

The KLCOB V2 / KLCOB Pro V2 Series in practice

The COB surface has a sealed coating, so it is cleanable and more impact-resistant, but in the event of damage the individual LED cannot be replaced: repair is always at module level. During installation the tolerance for deviation from the plane is under 0.3 mm, because at a 0.93 mm pixel pitch even a hair's-breadth step is visible close up; the 3° curving allows a minimum radius of 2.87 m, and the series is not suitable for a tighter arc. Module replacement is from the front, magnetically; the calibration coefficients are on the receiving card, so a replaced module needs recalibration. In a control room, where the wall stays in one place for years, 2–3% spare modules is enough, because there is no transport stress — there the typical failure is ageing of the power supply, not of the module.

Alternatives to the KLCOB V2 / KLCOB Pro V2 Series

If a pixel pitch below 1 mm is not required, the LianTronics VMQ (1.2–2.5 mm, also COB, front-serviceable) or the Unilumin UMiniIII Pro is cheaper for the same purpose. For a large surface, the Leyard TWA builds with fewer joints thanks to its factory-measured 54-inch cabinet. If there is no service corridor behind the wall and the power supplies have to go into a rack, the Leyard DirectLight is the tool for the job. This series is not suitable for events or frequent moving.
