What is pixel pitch and why does it matter?
Pixel pitch decides both image sharpness and price. We show how to choose a pitch on the basis of viewing distance and budget.
Pixel pitch is simply the distance between the centres of two neighbouring pixels on a LED video wall, given in millimetres - on a wall marked P4 it is exactly 4 millimetres. The smaller the number, the more densely the pixels sit across a given surface, which produces a sharper, more detailed image, particularly at close viewing distances. As a rule of thumb, the comfortable minimum viewing distance in metres is roughly 2.5-3 times the pitch in millimetres, so a P4 wall is best viewed from 10-12 metres and a P10 wall from 25-30 metres for the eye not to perceive the individual pixels separately.
This figure is one of the most important yet most frequently misunderstood technical parameters when buying a LED video wall, because it directly determines both image sharpness and price. Why the pitch you choose matters
Pixel pitch is not a simple quality grade where smaller is always better - it is a parameter that has to be matched to the actual conditions of use. If you fitted a large-pitch wall, P10 for instance, in a shop window where passers-by look at the surface from 1-2 metres, the image would be grainy and pixelated and the text barely legible. Conversely, if you chose a needlessly fine P2 pitch for a large display beside a stadium viewed from 50 metres, you would only be increasing the cost without viewers perceiving any visible improvement in quality - at that distance the human eye cannot distinguish individual pixels anyway.
Viewing distance and pitch: a practical table
The approximate values below help you get your bearings quickly: P1.5-P2.5 pitch is recommended for viewing distances of roughly 2.5-6 metres, typically in studios, meeting rooms or close-up shop window surfaces; P3-P4 pitch is comfortable out to roughly 7-12 metres, the typical choice for shop interiors or street-facing displays; P5-P6 pitch suits distances up to about 12-18 metres, a common choice in restaurants and car dealerships; P8-P10 pitch is intended for 20-30 metres or more, typically used on large outdoor advertising surfaces and roadside billboards where the image is viewed from a distance.
How pitch and resolution relate
Pixel pitch and resolution are closely connected but not the same: resolution shows how many pixels fit across the whole surface of the wall (which gives the level of detail for a given size), while pitch describes the density of the individual pixels. On a wall of the same size, say 3 by 2 metres, a smaller pitch (a denser pixel layout) produces a higher resolution (more pixels), giving a sharper image that can show finer detail. That is why, when we talk about resolution in connection with a LED video wall, it is in fact the pitch and the size of the wall together that determine the outcome, rather than a fixed pre-manufactured resolution figure as on a monitor.
Expert tip: do not pay for a needlessly fine pitch
Expert tip: the most common mistake our customers make is asking for a far finer pitch than they actually need, believing it always means better quality. In reality, if the viewing distance is 15-20 metres, a P3 pitch gives no perceptible advantage over a P5 or P6, yet it can cost one and a half to two times as much per square metre, because it requires denser electronics and more LED chips. Always start from the actual, typical viewing distance rather than from what resolution is theoretically achievable.
The effect of pitch on price
The price per square metre is closely tied to pitch: the smaller the pitch, the more LED chips, driver ICs and finer manufacturing technology the same surface requires, which means higher material and production costs. A P2 indoor wall is typically far more expensive per square metre than a P4, and the P4 is in turn dearer than a P8-P10 outdoor board. It is therefore worth determining the actual viewing distance realistically when planning the project, because it is one of the decisions with the greatest effect on the total budget - for an accurate quote tailored to your site, it is worth requesting a quotation.
Differences in pitch choice indoors and outdoors
Outdoors, because of the greater viewing distance and the light conditions, a larger pitch (P4-P10) is typically quite sufficient and indeed the more economical choice, while for indoor, close-viewing applications (shop window, reception, meeting room) the P1.5-P4 range is more usual. For video content and cameras: the role of refresh rate
If the LED video wall will also be filmed at events or used as the backdrop for a live broadcast, refresh rate has to be considered alongside pitch: the professional recommendation is at least 3,840 Hz so that flickering lines or bands do not appear on camera. This parameter is independent of pitch, but on walls intended for event production or studio use it should always be agreed with the manufacturer together, because not every controller card supports a high refresh rate.
Common mistakes worth avoiding
The most common mistake is choosing a needlessly fine pitch for an application where viewers look at the wall from a distance anyway - that only raises the cost with no visible benefit. Another common misconception is that pitch is the only quality indicator, whereas brightness, colour fidelity, calibration and the quality of the chip manufacturer determine the result at least as much. Many people also forget that content has to be designed for the pitch: content laid out with text too small for a large-pitch wall stays illegible however good the hardware.
Why you should not decide on the cheapest no-name product by pitch alone
It is important to know that two LED video walls with the same pitch on paper can differ significantly in quality depending on which chip manufacturer's components they use and how consistent the colour and brightness of the production batch is. A carefully calibrated P4 wall built with chips from a named, quality manufacturer gives a far more even, more durable image than a no-name product assembled from mixed batches and also advertised as P4. Pitch is therefore only one factor in the decision - the origin of the chip, in-house quality control and the warranty backing count at least as much.
Application examples by pitch
In practice, a pharmacy cross sign in a shop window or a reception information display, where viewers typically stop 1-3 metres away, calls for P1.5-P2.5 pitch for a sharp image that renders small text well. A restaurant's digital menu or a car dealership's interior display wall, where customers view the content from 3-8 metres, is comfortably legible in the P2.5-P4 range. For a scrolling LED sign mounted on a shop facade and viewed from the street, where passers-by and drivers see the surface from 10-20 metres, P4-P6 pitch is the sensible choice, while for a large advertising surface beside an industrial estate or a motorway the P8-P10 range is both economical and striking.
Matching to size: how pitch relates to the physical size of the wall
It is also important to understand that pitch does not determine the final resolution on its own but together with the planned physical size of the wall, and with it the level of detail the content can carry. On a smaller wall, say 2 by 1 metre, a finer pitch adds proportionally less to the cost of the project than on a large 10 by 5 metre outdoor display, where every millimetre of pitch reduction means tens of thousands more LED chips. That is exactly why determining a realistic viewing distance matters particularly on large walls, since the financial stakes of a badly chosen, needlessly fine pitch are highest there.
Why looking pitch up online is not enough - ask for a site survey
Many buyers try to settle the pitch themselves on the basis of online calculators and articles, but in reality the characteristics of the site - the angle of incident sunlight, shading from surrounding buildings or the typical directions of movement - can significantly influence what counts as ideal. An experienced specialist's site survey takes these factors into account as well as bare distance, so instead of an online estimate it is always worth asking for a personal consultation before the final decision, particularly on larger investments.
Batch consistency: why modules should come from one production run
A less well-known detail that matters to the result is that LED modules are produced in batches, and two modules from different batches can show perceptible colour or brightness differences even at the same pitch and nominal specification. If a wall is extended later, or a damaged module has to be replaced, it is therefore critical that the manufacturer holds modules from the same batch in stock, otherwise a visible patchy difference can appear across the surface. A reliable manufacturer manages this risk from the outset by supplying the project's entire module requirement from one production run.
