Indoor or outdoor LED video wall - which should you choose?

The main difference between an indoor and an outdoor LED video wall can be captured in three numbers: brightness, protection rating and pixel pitch. An indoor wall is typically built at 600-1,000 nits with basic protection of around IP30-40 and a finer pixel pitch of P1.5-P4, because it is used in an enclosed space at closer viewing distances. An outdoor wall, by contrast, needs at least 4,500-5,000 nits, an IP65 rating or higher and typically a larger pitch of P4-P10, so that it stays legible in strong sunlight and resists rain, dust and temperature swings.

For outdoor LED video walls a minimum of IP65 is recommended, giving complete dust protection and resistance to water jets, while for surfaces particularly exposed to rain or requiring washing down, higher ratings of IP66-IP67 also occur. Indoor walls do not need that level; basic dust protection of around IP30-40 is typically enough, since they are never exposed to precipitation or direct moisture.
Pixel pitch: close or distant viewing
Indoor walls are typically built with a finer pitch of P1.5-P4, because viewers often look at them from 1-10 metres - at a reception desk, in a shop window or in a meeting room the aim is a detailed, sharp image. On outdoor walls, where the typical viewing distance is 10-30 metres or more, a larger pitch of P4-P10 is quite enough for a sharp image and makes for a significantly cheaper solution. Expert tip: never install an indoor wall outdoors - and not automatically under cover either
Expert tip: many business owners assume that a covered terrace or a drive-through offers enough protection for a cheaper indoor wall, but humidity, temperature swings and wind-blown dust can still destroy the electronics within months. If the surface is exposed to the open air to any degree, even under cover, always choose an outdoor build with an appropriate IP rating. The short-term saving proves far more expensive over time once you factor in loss of warranty and early failure.
Temperature tolerance and weather extremes
Outdoor LED video walls are designed to withstand the extremes of the local climate, summer heat and winter frost alike, typically across an operating temperature range from -20 to +50 degrees Celsius. To achieve that, the outdoor build often includes active cooling (a fan) or a heating element for safe start-up in extreme cold. Indoor walls, by contrast, are designed for a controlled, relatively stable temperature environment, so this enhanced thermal capability is not justified for them, which further reduces manufacturing cost and price.
The price difference between the two types
As a general rule, the price per square metre of an outdoor LED video wall is higher than that of an indoor counterpart of similar pitch, because the more robust housing, the stronger LED chips needed for higher brightness and the weatherproof power supply units all increase manufacturing cost. Once pitch is taken into account, though, the picture is more nuanced: the price per square metre of an outdoor wall with a typically larger pitch (P6-P10) can come closer to that of a finer-pitch indoor wall than you might first think. When to choose an indoor wall
An indoor LED video wall is the right choice if the surface will be in an enclosed, air-conditioned or at least covered space entirely protected from precipitation, and viewers typically encounter it from close range (1-10 metres) - typically a shop interior, a reception, a meeting room, a display above a pharmacy counter or a restaurant's digital menu. Because you are not paying for extreme brightness and weather resistance, the same investment buys a finer pitch and a sharper image, which is a significant visual advantage at close viewing distances.
When to choose an outdoor wall
An outdoor LED video wall is necessary if the surface is directly exposed to sunlight, rain or other weather - typically a facade-mounted illuminated sign, a large display beside a car park, a petrol station price board or a street-facing advertising surface. In those cases high brightness and protection above IP65 are not an optional extra but a basic requirement: an indoor-build wall in these conditions would fail within months, and the warranty would not cover damage caused by use outside the intended purpose.
Mixed cases: partly covered or transitional spaces
A common dilemma is the case of partly covered spaces such as an open entrance, a roofed but open-sided terrace or an arcade - in these cases the outdoor build is almost always the safe choice, because wind-blown dust and humidity can still reach the surface. This is particularly critical on outdoor walls mounted on facades or at height, where servicing from the rear would require scaffolding or clear space behind the wall, significantly increasing maintenance time and cost. When buying, always ask whether the model you choose is front-serviceable and whether the manufacturer holds spare parts in stock for quick replacement.
Warranty and local service backing for both types
Whether you choose an indoor or an outdoor wall, the key to long-term satisfaction is reliable warranty backing and locally available spare parts. On outdoor walls, continuously exposed to weather, this matters even more, because the likelihood of failure is inherently higher than in a protected indoor environment. It is worth choosing a manufacturer or distributor who guarantees not only the product but long-term servicing and parts supply, so you do not have to wait weeks for a component from abroad when something goes wrong.
Common mistakes worth avoiding
The most common mistake is deciding purely on price and choosing a cheaper, lower-protection wall for an outdoor or transitional space, which then fails within months, with the warranty not covering use outside the intended purpose. Hybrid approaches: if you are unsure about future use
If a business faces an expanding, multi-site or changing future - considering only an indoor shop window today, for instance, but with a facade-mounted illuminated sign in the plans - it is worth designing modularly now, so the system can be extended later without discarding the whole investment.
