More detail on LED modules — technical background, comparison, applications
A module is typically 320×160 mm or 250×250 mm, with the exact size depending on manufacturer and type, which is why we always identify a replacement module against the existing system. Outdoors, brightness above 4,500–5,000 nits and an IP65 rating are the norm; indoors 600–1,000 nits is enough, and in return you get a finer pixel pitch for the same money. We help you choose the module that suits your location and viewing distance, and identify the compatible replacement part for an existing wall from a photograph.
What is it, and who is it for?
The LED module is the physical building block from which LED walls, signs and bespoke displays are assembled — in itself a panel filled with tiny LEDs and the associated control electronics. We supply it above all to systems integrators, event production companies, operators who already have an LED wall, and businesses building a display of their own design or needing to replace a damaged module in a working system. If you do not need a complete turnkey solution, only the module itself, this category is your entry point.
Choosing pixel pitch and type
The two key questions are pixel pitch and installation environment. Pixel pitch is decided by the distance of the nearest viewer: P2–P3 for a shop window viewed close up, P4–P5 for a shop interior, P6–P10 for a street frontage or greater distances — as a rule of thumb, 1 mm of pitch corresponds to about 2.5–3 metres of comfortable minimum viewing distance. Outdoors we only recommend IP65-rated modules with brightness above 4,500–5,000 nits, because that is what withstands sunlight and rain; indoors the lower 600–1,000 nit range is enough, and in exchange you get a finer resolution for the same price, since there is no need for the more expensive LEDs optimised for high brightness.
Full-colour or single-colour?
A full-colour (RGB) module is required for images, video and any demanding advertising surface where true colour reproduction matters. Single-colour modules — red, white, amber, green, blue — are ideal for scrolling signs, information boards and price displays: they are considerably cheaper, need less driver electronics, and with text content you lose nothing in impact. The decision is therefore not one of quality but of function: what do you want to display?
What determines the price?
The price of a LED module is driven first by pixel pitch: the finer the resolution, the more LEDs and driver chips go onto a given surface, and the cost rises in proportion. The second factor is brightness and ingress protection — an outdoor, high-brightness IP65 module needs more expensive components and a stronger power supply than its indoor counterpart. The third is colour depth (RGB or single-colour), the fourth the compatibility of the control card if we are matching an existing system. The fifth item is volume discount: the unit price improves on larger orders. For a replacement module, identification and any special sourcing may also appear on a separate line if the type is rare or discontinued.
How ordering and fitting work
For a self-built display, the process starts by clarifying the purpose and the viewing distance, and from that we recommend pixel pitch and brightness. For a replacement or extension, we identify the type of the existing module from a photograph and measurements, then check the compatibility of the control card. Once the modules are sourced — from our own stock or from the manufacturer — fitting involves seating them in the support structure, connecting the cabling and configuring the controller. For larger systems made up of many modules we also carry out on-site assembly and calibration, so the result gives uniform brightness and colour with no visible module pattern.
Quality and reliability
It is at module level that the fear of "cheap tat" is either justified or laid to rest: the decisive factors are the manufacturer and grade of the LED chip, and whether the modules come from the same production batch. If batches differ, the wall will look patchy even when every individual module is of good quality. Alongside the 100,000-hour rated life, the modular build is the point: replacing a faulty panel does not mean replacing the whole wall — that is one of the biggest savings in cost and time across the system's entire life.
Replacement and extension for an existing wall
We can supply modules for your existing LED wall too: we identify the compatible panel from the pixel pitch, the module dimensions and the type of control, for which a photograph of the back of the module and a few measurements are enough. That way replacing a damaged module does not mean replacing the whole wall — one of the biggest advantages of the modular build, and considerably cheaper than investing in a completely new display. We handle extensions the same way: matching the existing system, we look for modules of the same pixel pitch and production series, so the extended surface does not stand out against the old.
Common mistakes and myths
The most frequent mistake is buying a module with an unnecessarily fine pixel pitch for a distant viewpoint, which only raises the cost. Another classic myth is that every module is compatible with every controller — in reality the control card, the power supply and the module's communication protocol all matter, which is why we always check this before a replacement. Many also undersize the support structure or the power feed, which leads to failure over time. Fitting an indoor module at an outdoor location is likewise a common and costly error, because the lack of an IP rating can destroy the electronics within months.

How do I find out which module is in my existing wall?
It can be identified from the type marking on the back of the module, the pixel pitch (mm between the centres of two LEDs) and the module dimensions. Send us a photo of the back of the module and we will tell you what is compatible.
Can I use an outdoor module indoors?
Yes, it will work, but it is usually unnecessary: it costs more, and while the high brightness can be turned down indoors, an indoor module gives you a finer resolution for the same money.
How many modules does a wall need?
Divide the wall dimensions by the module dimensions — for example, with a 320×160 mm module a 2×1 metre wall needs about 6×6, that is 36 pieces. Our configurator works this out automatically.
What warranty applies to the modules?
We typically provide a 2–5 year manufacturer's warranty, and the rated LED life is 100,000 hours, which is 20+ years at 12 hours a day.
How quickly can I get a replacement module if one fails?
We keep common types in stock, so a replacement is usually possible within 24–48 hours; for rarer or discontinued types this can extend to a few days.
Can modules from two different manufacturers be mixed in one wall?
Not advisable — colour temperature and brightness differ between manufacturers, which causes visible patchiness; for a replacement we always look for a type matching the original production series.
At what quantity does a discount apply?
The unit price improves on larger orders, typically from several square metres of modules upwards; we give an exact price by quantity and type in the quote.
