When choosing a LED module, pixel pitch (the P value) decides how close you can stand and still see a sharp LED video wall. We work through modules from P2 to P10, the indoor and outdoor differences, and what to watch so a wrong choice does not cost you.

When you plan a LED video wall, one of the most important decisions is the pixel pitch of the module. The number after the P gives the distance in millimetres between the centres of two neighbouring pixels: the smaller that value, the denser the resolution and the closer you can stand and still see a sharp, undistorted image. The most common options on the market are P2, P2.5, P3, P4, P5, P6, P8 and P10, and each has its ideal field of use. A simple international rule of thumb says that every 1 mm of pixel pitch corresponds to roughly 1 metre of comfortable minimum viewing distance, so a P4 module looks sharp from about 3-4 metres. P2 and P2.5 - champions of close viewing
P2 and P2.5 modules are designed for places where viewers look at the screen from one or two metres, sometimes closer. Typical uses are a meeting-room video wall, a studio backdrop, a flagship store window or a reception design feature. The dense pixel layout makes the image almost photographic in sharpness, but manufacturing and component costs are higher too, so the price per square metre exceeds that of coarser-pitch modules. It is worth knowing that at this density the load on the controller card and the power supply is also greater, so system design must account for it - an under-specified power feed here quickly costs you resolution and brightness.
P3 and P4 - the most popular middle ground
P3 and P4 modules represent the widest slice of the market today, because they strike an excellent compromise between price and image quality. These are what you most often see on the LED video walls of restaurants, shops, event spaces and conferences, where viewers typically watch from 2-5 metres. The P4 module is somewhat cheaper than P3, and in larger spaces, where the audience does not stand directly in front of the wall, it involves no compromise in quality at all. P5 and P6 - events and larger halls
P5 and P6 modules are typically used in larger event halls, at exhibitions and in business environments where the viewing distance already exceeds 5-6 metres. These modules are also widespread in cabinet form, because they make up an easily assembled modular system with which a large video wall can be built and struck quickly. Their coarser pixel layout also makes them more economical to run than a denser module of the same size, which can mean significant savings in long-term operation, particularly with several hours of continuous use a day.
P8 and P10 - the world of large outdoor displays
P8 and P10 modules are designed primarily for large outdoor surfaces where viewers see the display from 10-20 metres or more: think of stadiums, roadside billboards or city-centre building facades. Here the coarser pixel layout is no disadvantage, since at that distance the eye merges the pixels into a continuous image anyway. In return, these modules can deliver far higher brightness - outdoors, a minimum of 4,500-5,000 nits with automatic brightness control is essential for content to remain visible in direct sunlight, while indoors 600-1,000 nits is perfectly sufficient.
Differences between outdoor and indoor modules
Alongside the P value, it matters just as much whether you choose an outdoor or an indoor build. Outdoor modules carry IP65 or higher protection and withstand rain, dust and temperature swings - a critical consideration in a continental climate where summer heat above 35 degrees Celsius and sub-zero winter cold both occur. Indoor modules, by contrast, do not need that level of protection but offer a finer pixel layout and better contrast ratio in enclosed spaces. A frequent buyer error is fitting an indoor module in a covered but open space - a passageway or a rooftop display case - where humidity and temperature swings still put serious strain on the electronics.
Will it be cheap rubbish? The question of quality
One of the most common worries customers bring to us is that a low-quality, no-name LED module will undermine the investment. That is a fair concern, because the market genuinely does contain modules assembled from mixed production batches with poor chips, which show colour variation and pixel faults after only a few months. An under-specified support structure or power supply can cause problems even with the best module, because the wall does not receive a stable, even supply, which leads to flicker or uneven brightness. It breaks and there is no service - the question of repairability
The other very common fear is that the LED video wall will fail and there will be nobody to supply parts or service, because the manufacturer is overseas or the importer disappears from the market. Full-colour and single-colour modules

These are significantly cheaper than their full-colour counterparts and consume less energy, since only one LED group has to be driven per pixel. If you only want to display text information or simple graphics - a bakery's daily range, or a pharmacy's opening hours - it is worth considering whether you really need the more expensive full-colour solution, or whether a simpler LED message sign will do the job.
Common mistakes worth avoiding
Buyers run into the same mistakes repeatedly during module selection. The most common is choosing too fine a pixel pitch for a location where nobody views the wall from closer than 3-4 metres, which needlessly inflates the cost of the investment. Another typical error is an under-specified support structure or power feed, which leads to failures and uneven brightness over the long term. It is also common to buy a no-name module from mixed production batches at a lower price and then discover six months later that parts of the wall are ageing differently and visible colour differences have developed across the panels. Finally, many forget about ingress protection in outdoor or semi-outdoor positions, and about serviceability - whether the wall can be opened from the front to repair a pixel fault.
How to choose for your own project
Always start module selection from the viewing distance: the rule of thumb is that the pixel pitch in millimetres should roughly equal the closest distance in metres from which viewers see the wall â about that for moving image, a little coarser for plain text and logos, finer for live sport. Also take account of the light conditions at the site, the available budget, and whether the wall will show static content or fast-moving images, because the latter may call for a control system with a better refresh rate - ideally at least 3,840 Hz where the wall will be filmed.
