In short

An IP65-rated, fine-pitch outdoor LED display for street advertising and digital shop windows, with a pixel pitch down to 2.5 mm.

Absen · outdoor fine-pitch, permanent installation LED cabinet

Absen AW Series LED module and cabinet

The AW Series is Absen's outdoor fine-pitch display family, designed for permanent, unattended outdoor installation — a good example of how a genuine outdoor IP65 cabinet differs from an indoor fine-pitch solution. Indoor fine-pitch panels are optimised for lower brightness and for operation in an enclosed, air-conditioned space, and have no dust or moisture sealing. The AW series, by contrast, holds an IP65 certification, which means the cabinet is completely dust-tight and protected against water jets from every direction — allowing durable, unattended operation in rain and in humid, dusty environments (a street-facing shop window, a bus stop, a railway station), which indoor fine-pitch products are not suited to.

Technically, the AW Series is available in 2.5 mm, 2.8 mm and 3.9 mm pixel pitches, with 5000-5500 nit brightness and a 7 680 Hz refresh rate, which gives a sharp, grain-free picture even seen from close up. The panel size is 500×500×99 mm or 500×1000×99 mm, at a weight of only 26.8 kg/m² according to the manufacturer.

The series is serviceable from both front and rear, with a universal cabinet design. Typical applications are street-side digital advertising signs, bus stop displays and railway station displays.

Where the AW Series sits in an LED wall system

In a fixed outdoor installation the cabinet sits on a bracket bolted to the support structure, with a sealed power supply and receiving card at the back; the signal arrives over Cat6, but above 100 m — the typical case for a street sign — a fibre section is needed, for instance from the 10G fibre output of a NovaStar MCTRL R5 or VX600. A 500×500 P2.5 cabinet is 200×200 = 40 000 pixels, so 16 cabinets per gigabit port, that is 4 m²; at P3.9, 39 cabinets and 10 m². A 30 m² P2.5 advertising sign therefore requires eight ports, for which a sender in the VX600 or MCTRL R5 class is enough, because the content is typically 60 Hz and 8-bit.

WHEN IT IS THE RIGHT CHOICE

For permanently installed, unattended outdoor digital advertising signs, shopfront displays and public transport hubs, where a sharp picture from close up and stable operation in all weather are required.

WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR

This is a permanent installation cabinet, not an event technology (rental) product — if a mobile, frequently transported outdoor LED wall is needed, Absen's PL series is the better place to look.

The AW Series in practice

IP65 is only worth anything if the sealing is maintained too: the rubber seals of the cabinet doors and the glands of the cable entries have to be checked annually, and the filters of the rear ventilation openings cleaned, otherwise dust blocks them and the power supply overheats. Outdoors, the brightness has to be regulated with a light sensor: 5 000 nit dazzles at night and ages the LEDs unnecessarily. The installation sequence: level the bracket rows, cabinets from the bottom up, 0.5 mm plane tolerance, then power connection and lightning protection — for a street sign, surge protection in the DEHNguard class is a basic requirement. Module replacement works from the front and from the rear alike; 2–3% spare modules and power supplies are recommended, because procurement lead times are long years after the installation.

Alternatives to the AW Series

If it is viewed from a greater distance and price matters, the Unilumin Usurface III Pro (6.67–10 mm, IP69K, 10 000 nit) is considerably cheaper per square metre. For a mobile, frequently transported outdoor wall, the Absen PL V3 or the Gloshine CB MAX is the option, not this. If the surface is an indoor shop window and the space behind it should also be visible, ROE Visual Vanish is the solution. For a single standalone outdoor advertising surface, the outdoor version of the Desay Smart LED Poster is also enough.
