UMiniIII Pro LED module and cabinet
The UMiniIII Pro is Unilumin's COB (Chip-on-Board) LED module family, developed for pixel pitches between 0.93 and 1.56 mm. The essence of COB technology is that the tiny LED chips are bonded directly onto the surface of the printed circuit board and then sealed with a protective layer, as opposed to the traditional SMD solution, where the individual LEDs are soldered onto the panel as pre-built, individually packaged components. Because of the COB construction there are no protruding, individual LED packages on the surface, which results in better mechanical impact and scratch resistance and more even light output, particularly at very fine pixel pitches, where the size and placement accuracy of SMD chips would be a limitation.
The UMiniIII Pro is available in 0.93 / 1.17 / 1.25 / 1.56 mm pixel pitch versions, at 6 kg per cabinet and 40 mm thick, in a cast aluminium housing. Brightness is around 600-1200 nit, and the contrast ratio ranges from 10 000:1 to 20 000:1, which the manufacturer's own technologies improve further, primarily in the quality of dark tone reproduction.
The modules are serviceable from front and rear alike, and the cabinet is designed for complete front maintenance.
Where the UMiniIII Pro sits in an LED wall system
The module has a COB surface, and the cabinet is cast aluminium, 40 mm thick and front-serviceable — there is no need to get behind the wall, and the cabinets sit on a wall rail or a frame. Port count: the P0.93 cabinet is 640×360 = 230 400 pixels, so two fit on one gigabit port; at P1.56 it is 384×216 = 82 944, and seven fit. A 4K (8.3 million pixel) P0.93 meeting room wall requires 13 ports, that is a sender at MX40 Pro or Colorlight X16 Pro level and a NovaLCT/VMP configuration — this resolution cannot be achieved with a two-port sending card.
WHEN IT IS THE RIGHT CHOICE
For conference rooms, meeting rooms, exhibition stands and studios, where viewers sit close to the display and a very fine pixel structure as well as a durable surface are important considerations.
WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR
The manufacturer's page gives no refresh rate (Hz) or maximum power consumption figure (W/m²) — these are worth requesting directly before purchase.
The UMiniIII Pro in practice
The advantage of the COB surface shows itself in servicing: no packaged LED protrudes, so the wall can be wiped down and transport damage is rarer, but there is no individual LED repair — with a faulty pixel the whole module is replaced. During installation the plane tolerance has to be kept under 0.3 mm, because at a 0.93 mm pitch a step is visible at arm's length; the cabinets' adjusting screws have to be checked in raking light. Module replacement is from the front, magnetically, without tools; the calibration coefficients are on the receiving card, so a replaced module has to be re-measured. On a fixed installation, 2–3% spare modules is enough. The manufacturer gives no refresh rate, so before camera use this has to be asked about specifically — below 3 840 Hz the picture bands in live broadcast.
Alternatives to the UMiniIII Pro
The LianTronics VMQ (1.2–2.5 mm) works on the same principle but with a larger, 640×480 cabinet, and below 1 mm the Absen KLCOB V2 is the option. If SMD is also sufficient and cable-free, complete front servicing is the main consideration, the Unilumin UpanelS is the cheaper sibling. For a large, factory-aligned surface, the Leyard TWA; for a wall with no rear access and power supplies moved into a rack, the Leyard DirectLight. For events, the COB rental cabinet is the LEDMAN JS Series.
