ROE Visual Ruby LED module and cabinet
The Ruby series is ROE Visual's platform of fine-pitch indoor panels, in pixel pitch versions between 1.2 and 2.6 mm. It was designed mainly for studio, retail and fixed-installation control room display applications, where long-term, reliable operation and colour/brightness uniformity are the most important considerations.
One of the most important distinctions with fine-pitch displays is whether the modules are serviceable from the front or from the rear. With a rear-service-only design, the technician has to get into the space behind the wall/frame to replace a failed module, which requires substantial access room behind the display. With a front-serviceable design, the module can be removed and replaced from the picture surface, with magnetic fixing, without rear access — which greatly simplifies maintenance in places where there is no free space behind the wall, such as a built-in studio wall. The models in the Ruby family are serviceable from both directions: they can be maintained where there is rear access, and equally where the panel can only be reached from the front.
The typical cabinet size is 500×500×73-108 mm, weighing 8-9.5 kg, with 1500-2500 nit calibrated brightness and a 7680 Hz refresh rate. Depending on the model, the LED type is SMD or flip-chip, with common cathode/anode technology.
Where the Ruby sits in an LED wall system
The Ruby's cabinet is 500×500 mm and 73–108 mm deep, containing modules, power supply and receiving card; because it opens from front and rear alike, it can be installed on a wall bracket or on a ground-built frame — the direction of the service route is decided on site, not by the product. Port count: at P1.25, 400×400 = 160 000 pixels, so four cabinets run on one gigabit port (1 m²); at P2.6, 192×192 = 36 864, giving 17 cabinets and 4.4 m². A 12 m² P1.25 studio wall therefore requires 12 ports, which means a sender at MX40 Pro, Colorlight X16 Pro or Brompton Tessera S8 level.
WHEN IT IS THE RIGHT CHOICE
Recommended for studio, retail or control room fixed installations, where long-term reliability and convenient maintenance (from both front and rear) both matter.
WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR
Because of its IP40 rating it can only be used indoors, in a controlled environment; whether there will be free access at the front or the rear for servicing has to be settled in advance at the installation site.
The Ruby in practice
In a fixed installation the plane of the frame determines the end result: the cabinet rows have to be set with a laser level, and the step between neighbouring cabinets should stay under 0.3 mm, because at a 1.25 mm pitch the seam is already visible above that. If the site only allows front access, it has to be settled before installation whether the power connection and the signal cabling can also be routed from the front — two-way cabinet servicing does not solve the route of the cabling. Module replacement is with a magnetic lifter, one or two minutes; the calibration coefficients are on the receiving card, so a replaced module calls for re-measurement. In a studio, where the wall runs for years, 2–3% spare modules and a spare power supply is a realistic stock, plus an annual dust clean.
Alternatives to the Ruby
If the wall is moved around and goes on tour, the ROE Visual Black Pearl BP2V2 is the rental sibling — the Ruby is for fixed installation. For a COB surface (cleanability, impact resistance) the LianTronics VMQ or the Unilumin UMiniIII Pro, and below 1 mm the Absen KLCOB V2. If there is no access at all behind the wall and the power supplies have to go into a rack, the Leyard DirectLight is the option. For a large surface with fewer seams, the Leyard TWA's 54-inch cabinet builds it.
