BrightSign XT4 asynchronous LED controller

The BrightSign XT4 belongs to the manufacturer's Series 4 upper-tier player family: it can run several HTML5 graphics at once, handles 4K video and graphics, and is also capable of receiving live TV broadcast. Unlike the classic LED wall controllers (NovaStar, Huidu), a BrightSign does not drive the LED modules directly but is wired ahead of a video processor (a Huidu VP series or a NovaStar VX series unit, for instance) to supply the HDMI/DP video signal and sophisticated, interactive digital signage content (HTML5, touchscreen applications, live data feeds).

This arrangement is worth choosing where the complexity of the content (interactivity, web graphics, several simultaneous sources) exceeds what a typical LED controller's built-in player can do, and the flexibility of a dedicated professional media player is needed in front of the LED wall instead.

Where the XT4 sits in an LED wall system

The very first element in the LED wall chain, the content source: the BrightSign does not drive the modules but supplies an HDMI 2.0a signal to a video processor or sending card (Huidu HD-VP2430, NovaStar VX400/VX600/VX1000), from where the usual path continues over Cat5e/Cat6 to the receiving cards and then over HUB75 to the modules. It stores its content on an M.2 PCIe SSD or a microSD card (max. 2 TB), and connects to the network over gigabit Ethernet, PoE+ or Wi-Fi. Authoring and fleet management take place in the BrightAuthor:connected software and cloud service, and the player runs the manufacturer's own BrightSign OS rather than Android or Windows.

WHEN IT IS THE RIGHT CHOICE

On LED wall projects where the complexity of the content (interactive HTML5, several simultaneous sources, a live TV input) exceeds what a built-in LED controller can do, and a separate media player is therefore wired ahead of the video processor.

WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR

A BrightSign does not drive the LED modules on its own: a separate video processor and LED sending card are always needed at the end of the chain.

The XT4 in practice

This device comes into play when the LED controllers' built-in player is not enough: an interactive HTML5 interface, several simultaneous web data sources, a touchscreen kiosk or a live TV input. In exchange the chain gets longer, and so does fault-finding: if the wall is black, you have to work through the source, the processor and the sending card in turn. The HDMI output's resolution and refresh rate have to be matched to the video processor's input; the wall's odd, non-standard resolution must not be set directly on the player, because scaling is the processor's job. The advantage of the closed, purpose-built BrightSign OS is that there is no Windows update, antivirus or accidental restart to allow for — a serious argument against an industrial PC in 24/7 operation. If the internet drops, the locally stored presentation carries on undisturbed and only the cloud updates and web data sources fall silent.

Alternatives to the XT4

If the content is simple scheduled video and images, a separate player is superfluous: an all-in-one asynchronous controller (NovaStar Taurus TB60, Huidu HD-A6L) solves it in one device, for less and with fewer failure points. If the wall is indoors and application execution is required, the NovaStar TU20 Pro's Android system may also come into consideration, with its built-in sending card. The BrightSign scales both upwards (more screens, higher bit rates) and downwards (the LS/HD series, simpler content) within its own family. The deciding factors: how complex the content is, and whether it justifies the longer, multi-element signal path.
