Onbon BX-6Q2 asynchronous LED controller

The BX-6Q2 belongs to Onbon's BX-6Q lintel series, made for driving full-colour LED signs, with a USB and a 100M LAN port and 512 MB/4 GB of flash memory. It supports system configuration and IP address changes, and offers a high refresh rate and grayscale depth for smooth, flicker-free video and animation display.

The unit can handle several dynamic content areas (multi-group dynamic areas) and online updates, and supports the connection of temperature, humidity, brightness and infrared sensors. It is configured through the manufacturer's LedShowTW software and is typically used on full-colour advertising signs above shop doors and in shop windows.

Where the BX-6Q2 sits in an LED wall system

A controller for narrow full-colour signs above shop doors: eight T75 ports and 16 RGB data ports go straight to the modules, with no separate receiving card, up to 196,608 pixels (1024×768). The source is the 512 MB of flash, with content arriving over USB or 100 Mbps LAN, and it can optionally be extended with a Wi-Fi/3G module. Programming is done with Onbon's LedShowTW software, which handles several dynamic content areas (multi-group dynamic areas) within one display, and remote supervision runs on the iLedCloud platform. Temperature, humidity, brightness and infrared sensors can also be connected to it, and their data displayed on the board.

WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR

The BX-6Q series is optimised primarily for lintel (narrow, long) displays; it is not the typical choice for large, square LED walls.

The BX-6Q2 in practice

The most common on-site fault is not the software but the module wiring: with the T75 ribbon cable plugged in the wrong way round, nothing or noise appears, so pin 1 of the cable has to be matched to the module's marking, and the output order entered exactly in LedShowTW's screen settings. If a brightness sensor is fitted, it has to be enabled in the software, or the board will burn at full brightness through the night — on a shopfront this is the most common source of complaints from residents. The 512 MB of flash is enough for short animations and several content areas, but not for a long video playlist. Content has to be drawn to the board's exact pixel dimensions, because there is no scaling. Without a network the loaded programme carries on; on card replacement the whole programme is lost, so the LedShowTW project file has to be saved after installation and handed over to the operator.

Alternatives to the BX-6Q2

If only text, a clock and simple animation go on the board, a single- or dual-colour card (Huidu HD-WF2, Listen LS-T16) solves it for a fraction of the price. If, on the other hand, the client expects video, a higher resolution or cloud fleet management, the Huidu HD-C16L (650,000 px, 12 HUB75E, Wi-Fi, remote power switching) or the NovaStar Taurus TB30 is the next step up. For a lamp-post, IoT-integrated traffic sign, the BX-Y08A from the same manufacturer is the targeted model. The deciding factors: the surface's pixel count, the need for video, and whether cloud remote supervision is required.
