What is a LED scoreboard, and who is it for?

A LED scoreboard is a purpose-built display that shows match data — score, clock, team names, penalties — sharply and legibly from a distance. It is aimed at sports clubs, municipal sports halls, schools and the operators of competition venues, whose primary aim is to support the running of the event and, secondarily, to make use of the sponsorship surface. Unlike classic boards that show digits only, today's LED solution also handles video, logos and animated content, so it serves both the event and the revenue side at once.

Choosing size and pixel pitch

For a scoreboard, viewing distance decides the pitch: in a school gym where the nearest spectator sits 10–15 metres away, a 4–6 mm pixel pitch is enough; at a larger outdoor pitch where the stand may be 30–50 metres away, even 8–10 mm stays sharp. Size should be set so that the score and the clock are unambiguously readable from the furthest seat — as a rule of thumb, digit height should be roughly 3–4% of the longest viewing distance. A common mistake is choosing a board that is too small for the hall, so that it can no longer be read from the back rows.

What determines the price of a scoreboard?

The price is set by the size of the board, the pixel pitch, the indoor or outdoor brightness class and the feature set of the control software (simple digit display or a full video-capable system). Separate items are the support structure (wall-mounted, free-standing or suspended), the cabling and the control desk, and the licences for sport-specific software modules (basketball, handball, football, swimming). We always list these separately, so you can see how much goes on the display itself and how much on the supporting systems.

Installation, from survey to training

The process starts with a free site survey where we look at the fixing points, the power supply and the intended position of the control desk; manufacturing and professional installation follow. Before handover we configure the software to the club's sport and rule set, test playback and manual control in live conditions, and then train the operators — usually a coach or a club employee — on the desk and the software. That training is always included in the price, because without it even the best board goes underused.

How reliable is it, and what service backing is there?

We build scoreboards with quality-controlled LED chips from a named manufacturer, colour-matched within a batch, so the display surface will not go patchy years later. Expected life is 80,000–100,000 operating hours, which with a few matches and training sessions a week means a decade or more. If a fault occurs, our own service operation and stocked spare parts are on hand; a module can be changed from the front in minutes, so even a fault on the eve of a match day causes no lengthy outage.

How much power does a scoreboard use in operation?

Scoreboards typically draw less than a full advertising wall, because the content shown — digits and logos — leaves large black areas: the average is around 100–180 W/m², rising temporarily during video playback. Many people assume a scoreboard can only show digits — in reality, today's LED boards can play full video content, animated logos and sponsor breaks, and it is worth making use of that. Another common myth is that the software will be complicated: sport-specific templates are designed so that a coach or a volunteer learns the controls in a few minutes. It is also a mistake to underestimate the board size relative to the depth of the hall — we always agree this at the site survey, so the score stays readable from the back row.
