NovaStar Taurus TB40 asynchronous LED controller

The TB40 is one of the most widespread Taurus models: it has a 1.8 GHz quad-core ARM A55 processor, 1 GB of RAM and a load capacity of up to 1,300,000 pixels. It has two gigabit Ethernet ports (one of which can also be set as a backup), HDMI 1.3 in and out (usable in synchronous mode as well), a 3.5 mm audio output, several USB ports, and Wi-Fi plus optional 4G/5G connectivity.

The factory 4G/5G module is not included as standard; it has to be bought and fitted separately if there is no wired or Wi-Fi internet at the installation site. The TB40 typically appears on medium-sized commercial and smart city applications (advertising boards, lamp-post displays, shop windows), where the TB30's capacity is already too little but the TB60's capabilities are superfluous.

Where the Taurus TB40 sits in an LED wall system

Content store, player and sending card in a single box: the picture starting from the 32 GB of internal storage reaches the receiving cards (A5s Plus, A8s, DH7512-S) over the LED outputs on Cat5e/Cat6, and then the modules over HUB75E. Since one gigabit LED port carries roughly 650,000 pixels at 60 Hz with an 8-bit source, the 1,300,000 pixel load capacity means two ports fully used — in practice 4–8 receiving cards. Content arrives from ViPlex Express (PC), ViPlex Handy (mobile) or the VNNOX cloud, and the wall's physical layout is set up in NovaLCT. Thanks to its HDMI input, a live source can also be connected in synchronous mode, in which case the internal storage stays idle.

WHEN IT IS THE RIGHT CHOICE

For medium-sized commercial displays, where reliable network redundancy with dual Ethernet ports matters and HDMI synchronous mode may also come into play.

WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR

The 4G/5G module has to be ordered separately; it is not in the box as standard. Take this into account at design stage if there is no wired internet on site.

The Taurus TB40 in practice

After first switch-on the device appears in Wi-Fi AP mode, the phone connects to it and ViPlex Handy recognises it; changing the factory AP password (12345678) is the first job. Next comes setting the time zone and the NTP source, then the brightness schedule — outdoors typically between 100% by day and 15–25% at night, tied to the clock or to a light sensor. The 4G/5G module is not in the box: it has to be ordered separately, fitted and given a SIM, or in the absence of local internet there is no remote access — the item most often underestimated in the quotation. One of the two Ethernet ports can be set as a backup, which has to be enabled in ViPlex Express. The Taurus is hard to integrate into a third-party AV control system: with no public protocol documentation there is no official Stream Deck/Companion module for it, unlike the MCTRL/VX series. If the internet drops, the downloaded content carries on; only updating stops.

Alternatives to the Taurus TB40

For a smaller, single-port wall the TB30 (650,000 px) is enough and noticeably cheaper. For a larger surface the TB60 (2,300,000 px, 5 LED ports) is the next grade up, and for building into your own enclosure the housing-free T60 offers the same capability. In other ecosystems the Huidu HD-A6L is its direct counterpart, with a similar load capacity. If the project also involves a live camera feed, several simultaneous video sources or event patching, a synchronous VX400/VX600 sender and a permanent source have to be planned instead of an asynchronous box. The deciding factors: the wall's pixel count, the need for a real-time signal, and 4G remote access.

Several people have asked for Stream Deck/Companion integration for the Taurus series (a popular controller for mobile display vans and deployable screens), but the developer has indicated that this cannot be implemented in the absence of official protocol documentation — so this model family is more isolated in integration terms than Novastar's other (MCTRL/VX) series.
