In short

Entry-level NovaStar all-in-one controller combining a video processor and a sending card in one box.

NovaStar VX400 LED wall controller

The VX400 is one of the smaller members of NovaStar's all-in-one controller family: a single unit combining video processing (scaling, image splicing) with the LED sending card function, so no separate video processor is needed. This simplifies the system design and reduces the number of devices to install on smaller event or fixed-installation projects.

According to the official manual (V1.0.0) the VX400 is the entry model of the NovaStar VX series, complemented above it by the larger VX600 and VX1000, which scale up both performance and port count.

Where the VX400 sits in an LED wall system

Processor and sending card in one box: four gigabit ports and two optical, 2.6 million pixels in total, with an output geometry of up to 10,240 pixels wide or 8192 pixels high — which also makes it suitable for ribbon walls. It has three operating modes (Video Controller, Fiber Converter, Bypass), so it can also be set up as a converter alongside another VX. Configuration with NovaLCT or V-Can; on the receiving side a NovaStar A-series card is required (A5s Plus, A8s).

WHEN IT IS THE RIGHT CHOICE

On a smaller event or fixed-installation LED wall, where a compact device combining video processor and sending card is what is needed.

WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR

Entry-level performance: for a project with a higher resolution or more inputs, the VX600 or VX1000 is worth considering.

The VX400 in practice

Port load allocation has its own set of rules: port 1 carries at least as many cabinets as port 2, port 2 as many as port 3 and so on; the number of cabinets per port has to be a whole multiple of the cabinet rows or columns; and the total pixel count on port 1 must not exceed 650,000. Anyone who ignores this gets a skewed or repeating picture. While the Data Flow is being set, the wall shows the result in real time: if there is no overlap or repetition, it can be saved. One MAIN and one PIP layer can be handled, but only the main layer can use a mosaic source, in which case PIP is not available. Presets can be saved, copied and renamed with the `PRESET` button.

Alternatives to the VX400

Above 2.6 million pixels you need the VX600 (3.9 million) or the VX1000 (6.5 million) — the decision is driven by pixel count, not by the number of inputs. For two PIP layers it is likewise worth looking at the VX600 and upwards. If you need no scaling and switching, only signal distribution, the MCTRL300 or the MCTRL660 Pro is cheaper. For a camera-facing wall, the Brompton Tessera S8 or SX40.
