Huidu HD-A4L asynchronous LED controller

The HD-A4L belongs to Huidu's dual-mode (synchronous and asynchronous) multimedia player family, with a load capacity of 655,360 pixels, 16 GB of memory, gigabit LAN and 5/2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. It has one HDMI input, suitable in synchronous mode for taking a live video signal, while in asynchronous mode it downloads and plays content from its built-in memory.

That duality makes it practical on installations where the same display sometimes has to carry a live event feed (a sports event or a conference, say) and sometimes standalone advertising or information playback. The HD-A4L offers a greater video window capacity than the HD-A3L (1×4K or 2×1080P simultaneously, for instance).

Where the HD-A4L sits in an LED wall system

A device with two roles: in asynchronous mode the 16 GB of internal storage is the source, in synchronous mode the HDMI input. In both cases the signal goes to the receiving cards (typically HD-R512T) over two gigabit LED outputs on Cat5e/Cat6, and on to the modules over HUB75E. The 655,360 pixel load capacity is roughly one port's worth; the second port makes distribution and cable length management easier. Content management is HDPlayer (PC and mobile), the wall's physical layout is HDSet, and cloud remote supervision is XiaoHui Cloud. Gigabit LAN, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and an optional 4G/5G module can be chosen as the upload route.

WHEN IT IS THE RIGHT CHOICE

On displays where it cannot be decided in advance whether live (synchronous) or standalone (asynchronous) playback will be needed, and the flexibility of a single device matters.

WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR

Because of the dual-mode function, the operating mode has to be set unambiguously at commissioning; mixing the two can lead to a faulty display.

The HD-A4L in practice

Commissioning starts with the AP-mode Wi-Fi connection, a password change, the time zone and the brightness profile, but most of the on-site errors come from dual mode: the operating mode has to be selected unambiguously in HDPlayer, because on a device set to synchronous mode the uploaded programme will not start, while in asynchronous mode the HDMI source stays black. The gigabit LAN is a noticeable step forward from the HD-A3L when uploading large videos. For a live event feed it is worth testing the source resolution in advance: the HDMI signal is scaled automatically in synchronous mode, whereas asynchronous content has to be rendered to the wall's exact pixel dimensions. An internet outage does not affect the asynchronous branch and the downloaded programme carries on; the synchronous branch, however, goes black the moment the source is lost. On replacement the programme and the network settings are lost, while the receiving cards' configuration remains.

Alternatives to the HD-A4L

If there will never be a live source, the HD-A3L is cheaper, provided you can live with the 100 Mbps LAN. For a larger wall and more simultaneous video windows, the HD-A6L (4 LED ports); for a high-resolution advertising board, the HD-A7. In other ecosystems the NovaStar Taurus TB50 is its direct dual-mode counterpart. If the live signal is the main event — a camera, switching between several sources, an event — then what is needed is not a dual-mode player but a video processor (HD-VP2430, NovaStar VX600) and a dedicated media source, because the HDMI input here is single-source.
