NovaStar CX40 Pro LED wall controller
The CX40 Pro is the 4K member of NovaStar's COEX series, offering HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort 1.2 and 12G-SDI video inputs and supporting remote signal distribution at 5 Gbps over the Ethernet ports and up to 40 Gbps over the optical port. A 5.5-inch touchscreen on the unit assists on-site configuration without a separate computer.
That combination (high bandwidth plus a built-in operating interface) is particularly convenient on installations where quick on-site setup is needed without connecting a PC.
Where the CX40 Pro sits in an LED wall system
A COEX-series controller configured with VMP, with two operating modes: All-In-One Controller and Send-Only Controller. The six output ports are not gigabit but 5 Gbit/s, and the single optical port is 40 Gbit/s — so the receiving card also has to come from the high-bandwidth family (CA50E, CA50C, XA50). With an older Armor card the port speed goes unused. The signal path: 4K source → CX40 Pro → Cat6A or fibre → CA50E → HUB → module.
WHEN IT IS THE RIGHT CHOICE
Where quick configuration on site without a computer is needed, the built-in touchscreen is a substantial advantage.
WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR
Because of the 4K inputs and the high bandwidth, the cabling (optical fibre) has to be planned to match.
The CX40 Pro in practice
The port capacity formula at 8-bit is load × 24 × refresh rate < 5 Gbit/s × 0.75; that works out at 2,592,000 pixels on a single port at 60 Hz, 1,296,000 at 120 Hz and 1,728,000 at 12-bit/60 Hz. That is roughly four times what the gigabit ports carry, so the same wall can be driven with a quarter of the network cabling — but only if the cabinets really do hold CA50E-class receiving cards. An important limitation is that screen configuration cannot be done on the LCD itself, only input settings: `Free Screen Configuration` takes place in VMP. The touchscreen locks automatically, and the lock time can be set in the system menu, which is useful for a machine installed in a public place.
Alternatives to the CX40 Pro
If twenty copper ports are needed from one box, the MX40 Pro is the sibling model — at the cost of having no touchscreen. If the existing wall is full of Armor-series cards (A8s, A10s Pro), the CX40 Pro's bandwidth goes to waste, and the MX40 Pro or the MCTRL4K is the logical choice. For a small wall this class is over-specified: a VX400 or an MCTRL660 Pro.
