Magnimage LED-550D LED wall controller

The LED-550D is Magnimage's 2K resolution LED video processor, built according to the Chinese manufacturer's official product page primarily for small and medium-sized fixed-installation or rental LED wall projects. The manufacturer offers the official user manual and the configuration software for download on the product page.

Alongside NovaStar and Colorlight, the Magnimage product line represents a third alternative, typically at a lower price point, widespread mainly in the Asian and the smaller European installation markets.

Where the LED-550D sits in an LED wall system

A video processor, so it goes between the source and the sending card: its two DVI-D outputs can feed two sending cards, while the DVI Loop output passes the input signal on unchanged to another device. On the input side there are 2× VGA, 1× DP, 1× DVI (expandable to two), 1× HDMI and 2× CVBS, with an optional SDI and USB media player module. The wall's pixel allocation and calibration remain in the sending controller's software regardless.

WHEN IT IS THE RIGHT CHOICE

On small to medium-sized, cost-effective LED wall projects that do not need the full ecosystem of the major manufacturers (NovaStar, Colorlight).

WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR

The official manual PDFs come from the manufacturer's own cloud storage (Aliyun OSS) over temporary, signed links, so it is better to cite the official product page than a direct download link and to fetch the current document from there.

The LED-550D in practice

The unit's most important and least known capability is the 120 Hz output refresh rate: it makes better use of the bandwidth towards the sending card, because more data fits down the same DVI cable — on an ultra-wide wall this can decide whether a second sending card is needed. The alternative is the conventional standard resolution with pixel-accurate sizing. Several units can be linked over the TX/RX ports, so a larger spliced wall can be built, up to 24,576 × 24,576 pixels. At commissioning, the built-in test patterns (0–72) include a pixel position finder: use it to check the cabinet order and any offset before sending any content to the wall.

Alternatives to the LED-550D

If four separate screens have to be served from one box, or the system grows beyond 8 million pixels, the LED-780H is the sibling model (8 DVI outputs, 4 groups). If there is only a small wall and no PIP or splicing is needed, the Kystar KS600 or the VDWall LVP615 is cheaper. On a new system, weigh up the all-in-one route (VX400 or VX600): there the processor and the sender are one device with one piece of software.
