Kystar U6 LED wall controller

The Kystar U6 is a multi-window splicing processor which, according to manufacturer and distributor data, can serve up to 10.4 million pixels over four output ports and supports the simultaneous display of six pictures in any layout (multi-window layout). It works with seamless transitions between switches and is capable of full 4K signal processing.

The device is useful primarily on control room and AV installation projects where several video sources (camera, PC, LED wall) have to be shown on one large display at the same time, in a flexible layout.

Where the Kystar U6 sits in an LED wall system

It sits between the source and the sending controller on the signal path, not in the controller's place: it takes eight DVI-U inputs (DVI, HDMI, VGA, CVBS) and passes the cropped, resized picture on over HDMI outputs — the manual describes twelve output channels. Towards the LED wall, then, a sending card or an all-in-one controller is still needed (MCTRL300, TS802D, VX400); the U6 does not drive receiving cards on its own. It is controlled over the LAN1 (100 Mbit/s), LAN2 (gigabit) and RS232 ports.

WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR

The product documentation is split between the manufacturer's Chinese (kystar.com.cn) and English (en.kystar.net) sites; before purchase it is worth confirming the exact model variant (its internal code name is often "W12") with the reseller.

The Kystar U6 in practice

The LAN2 gigabit port is not only for configuration: it carries the signal echo, that is, live monitoring of the input and output pictures in the software — its most useful function in a control room. The output ports can be reordered from the software (output port mapping), so incorrectly ordered cabling can be corrected after the fact without having to climb behind the rack. The EDID can be entered individually, and 32 scene modes can be stored with one-button recall; at a live event this replaces manual switching. On a split picture the splicing mode has to be chosen to match the actual display layout, and a custom layout can be entered alongside the factory patterns.

Alternatives to the Kystar U6

If the aim is really to drive one LED wall rather than to splice several displays, an all-in-one controller (VX600, Colorlight X16 Pro) is more efficient, because it saves the separate processor and the HDMI cabling. If mixed sources have to be handled in a control room with card-based expandability, the NovaStar H series is the bigger sibling. For a simpler two-output job, the Kystar KS600 or the VDWall LVP615 is enough.
