Magnimage LED-780H LED wall controller

The LED-780H is Magnimage's higher-capacity LED video processor: it divides its eight DVI outputs into four groups, and four separate screens can be spliced from a single unit — horizontally, vertically, at the same or at differing sizes. One unit drives 8,000,000 pixels in total.

In non-spliced mode every output displays four layers at any size and position, while the built-in input matrix switches seamlessly between eight sources. There is preview switching, rotated output, DP loop, logo storage, image cropping, image freeze, and preset saving and loading.

The 780H is the base model: expansion modules can add further 2K or 4K inputs (the 780HD, HD2, HDV, HDS, HV and HV2 variants denote different DVI, VGA and SDI arrangements), as well as output monitoring — one IP preview and one DVI monitor output.

Where the LED-780H sits in an LED wall system

As a video processor it goes between the source and the sending cards: the eight DVI outputs can serve eight sending cards or sending boxes, so a large wall can be driven split into several segments. Here too it has no direct connection with the receiving cards: cabinet parameters, brightness and calibration remain in the sending controller's software (NovaLCT, LEDStudio, LEDVISION). Several units can be cascaded if an ultra-wide picture has to be built.

On larger but not yet top-tier LED wall projects, where the value for money of the Magnimage ecosystem is attractive.

The LED-780H in practice

With eight outputs the biggest risk is getting the grouping wrong: the four groups have to be assigned to the wall segments in advance, on paper, because rearranging them later affects the allocation of every sending card. EDID handling and the custom output resolution are key here as well: the output has to deliver the segment's actual pixel dimensions, not a standard resolution. Because of the expansion module build, the exact type designation has to be confirmed at purchase, since the 780HD, 780HDV and 780HV2 denote different input arrangements — the designation 780H on its own is not enough to place an order. At a live event, image freeze and preset loading are the two most used functions.

Alternatives to the LED-780H

If one screen is enough and eight outputs are not needed, the LED-550D delivers the same picture quality for considerably less. If the system is being built anyway, an MX40 Pro or a VX1000 replaces the processor and sending card pair and keeps the configuration in a single piece of software. For a control room job with mixed inputs, the NovaStar H series or the Kystar U6 is the more specialised device.
