Colorlight X16 Pro LED wall controller

The X16 Pro is Colorlight's professional all-in-one LED controller: sixteen gigabit RJ45 outputs, an input capacity extending to 4096×2160@60 Hz and custom resolution settings. On the input side there are HDMI 2.0 (with a loop output), DP 1.2, 2× DVI, 2× HDMI 1.4 and 2× 3G-SDI, with seamless switching between them; only one of the HDMI 2.0 and the DP 1.2 can be used at a time.

In image processing it handles up to seven windows, at any size and position, with broadcast-grade scaling, cropping and image splicing. It supports Genlock (input and loop output), HDCP, Art-Net control, the RS232 serial protocol and operation from a mobile app.

Redundancy can be set up both within a single unit and between two units. There is precise colour management for setting the LED wall's colour space, and improved grayscale handling at low brightness, which matters in a dark studio environment.

Where the X16 Pro sits in an LED wall system

The signal path: source → X16 Pro → 16× Cat6 → Colorlight receiving card (5A-75B, 5A-75E, i9) → HUB card → module. Configuration takes place in LEDVISION: discovery of the sender and the receiving cards, `Receiver Mapping` (that is, the physical allocation of the cabinets), saving to the cards and setting the backup port all happen there. A Colorlight ecosystem: it will not work with a NovaStar or Linsn receiving card.

WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR

The documentation does not come directly from the manufacturer's own domain; before a larger project it is worth having the exact technical data confirmed by the local Colorlight distributor.

The X16 Pro in practice

The `Receiver Mapping` workflow has three stages: setting, saving to the receiving cards, then reading back (`Read Back`). The read-back is the step people tend to skip, yet it is what proves the allocation really is on the cards and not only in the software — the difference shows up after a power cut. The backup port is set in the same place, and for redundancy between two units it has to be done on both machines. Art-Net support means the wall can also be driven from a lighting desk, but brightness can then be set from two places, so it has to be decided in advance which one governs. The EDID can also be entered manually if the source does not offer the wall's actual resolution.

Alternatives to the X16 Pro

If the wall calls for more than a 4K input, or the aim is cinematic colour correction (3D LUT) and XR shooting, the Z6 Pro-G2 or the Z8 is the next step up — though those have optical outputs, so a converter is also needed. On a smaller, simple wall the S2 sending card is enough. This is not an option for NovaStar-based cabinets: there the VX1000 or the MX40 Pro is the equivalent weight class.
