Colorlight Z8 LED wall controller

The Z8 is one of the high-performance video controllers in Colorlight's Z series, developed primarily for larger professional LED wall systems. The official user manual (V1.0) describes the hardware connection points and the configuration procedure with the Colorlight iSet/LEDVISION software.

As a member of the Z series, the Z8 targets greater capacity than the Z6 Pro, so it comes into consideration on projects where the number of inputs or the pixel count to be processed exceeds the limits of the smaller Colorlight models.

Where the Colorlight Z8 sits in an LED wall system

It works within Colorlight's closed ecosystem: the Z8 on the sending side, a Colorlight receiving card on the receiving side (5A-75B, 5A-75E, i9), discovery and sender setup with iSet, and the cabinet parameters written with LEDSETTING. It does not drive NovaStar or Linsn receiving cards. The build is card-based: the number of input (SDI, DP, HDMI) and output cards in the frame can be varied, up to six cards and 16 network outputs according to the manufacturer's data.

The Colorlight Z8 in practice

On a card-based machine the physical order of the cards determines the port numbering, so expansion has to be planned in advance: an output card inserted later can renumber the existing ports, and the whole cabinet allocation then has to be redone. Here too the receiving card parameter file has to be requested from the module supplier, exactly as in the NovaStar world — it can be read back in LEDSETTING and saved to the cards, but producing one from scratch requires knowing the module's driver IC, scan mode and data order. The firmware and software versions are linked: an older iSet release will not recognise newer cards, and the discovery silently returns an empty list.

Alternatives to the Colorlight Z8

If six cards' worth of expandability is not needed, the Z6 Pro-G2 gives the same image processing with a fixed four input cards. If a copper output without an optical converter is required, the X16 Pro. In a NovaStar-based system the equivalent weight class is the MX40 Pro or the H series. For camera work, the Brompton Tessera SX40, where the live control integration and shutter synchronisation are stronger.
