NovaCLB (calibration software)
NovaCLB exists in two purpose-built versions: NovaCLB-Cabinet for production-line, cabinet-level calibration, and NovaCLB-Screen for full-screen calibration carried out on site on the fully assembled screen. Both require a dedicated calibration camera or light-measuring instrument, with which the software surveys the brightness and colour deviations of individual pixels/modules and then writes correction data to the receiving cards.
Calibration matters particularly on large walls made up of many cabinets, where small differences between production batches (colour/brightness variance) would otherwise cause visible patchiness in the picture.
Where the NovaCLB sits in an LED wall system
NovaCLB comes in at the end of commissioning, alongside NovaLCT or SmartLCT: the calibration camera (a NovaStar CA50E or an M3-series colorimeter) is set up in front of the wall, the software sends test patterns to the wall through the controller, measures the result coming back, and writes the calculated correction coefficients into the memory of the receiving cards. It therefore takes up no place in the signal path: it uses the same laptop – sending card – Cat6 – receiving card channel as the configuration software. The coefficients stay on the card, so the calibration remains valid after the laptop is disconnected.
WHEN IT IS THE RIGHT CHOICE
On larger LED walls assembled from many cabinets/modules, where colour and brightness differences between production batches have to be evened out after installation or on the production line.
WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR
NovaCLB is not enough on its own — a compatible calibration camera is also needed, and the Cabinet and the Screen versions were made for different workflows and are not interchangeable.
The NovaCLB in practice
Camera measurement is only accurate in a darkened space: stray light, a reflective surface or sunlight falling on the wall distorts the result, which is why on-site calibration of an outdoor wall is usually done at night. The cabinet version is for a production-line environment, where every cabinet is placed in front of the camera separately, at a fixed distance; the screen version measures the already installed wall as a whole, and the data from the two are not interchangeable. After calibration, the correction has to be switched on in NovaLCT's Calibration tab; without that the data is uploaded but has no effect — this is the most common reason a measurement appears to have done nothing. It also has to be reckoned with that calibration reduces the maximum brightness, because it pulls the brighter pixels down to the weakest one: on an outdoor wall this has to be planned for in advance.
Alternatives to the NovaCLB
If the wall is small and came from a single production batch, calibration can often be left out — NovaLCT's brightness and gamma settings already improve a lot. On Colorlight hardware, LEDSETTING's built-in, temperature-based dynamic calibration does the same job without a separate program. On a premium, in-front-of-camera wall, Brompton Hydra or Megapixel Omnical gives more accurate profiling across the full brightness range, in exchange for only working with that manufacturer's own receiving cards.
