Mean Well LRS-350 LED wall component

The LRS series is one of Mean Well's most widespread general-purpose, enclosed metal-cased power supply families, developed not specifically for LED displays but for broader industrial/commercial use — which is exactly why it is a very common, well-documented and easily obtainable component alternative in LED wall distribution cabinets, when the system has to be repaired or extended from a third party instead of the module manufacturer's own power supply.

The 350 watt LRS-350 is available in several output voltage versions (from 3.3V to 48V), among them a 5V build with which 5V LED modules can be powered directly. From a maintenance or replacement point of view it matters that the LRS's enclosed build does not match the space-saving dimensions of module-specific power supplies (G-Energy JPS/GPS and the like) optimised for an LED cabinet.

Where the LRS-350 sits in an LED wall system

The LRS sits on the cabinet's mounting plate or on a DIN rail, wired in series on the AC side with a circuit breaker and a surge protective device (SPD), and works into the modules' 5V distribution bus on the DC side. The 5V version delivers roughly 60 A, which has to be taken to the modules with a short cable of large cross-section. Voltage drop on the distribution bus is the biggest design risk, so the difference in cable length between the module near the supply and the far one has to be evened out during installation, rather than wired up 'as it comes'.

WHEN IT IS THE RIGHT CHOICE

As a power supply mounted in a distribution cabinet for repair or extension, where an industrially widespread, easily replaceable component matters more than the smallest size.

WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR

The LRS's enclosed build takes up more room than the flat power supplies designed specifically for an LED display cabinet (the G-Energy JPS, for instance) — with a tight cabinet size this can be a design constraint.

The LRS-350 in practice

Never size the power supply to its nominal rating. Instead of the average consumption given on the module datasheet (typically a third to a half of the maximum), calculate with the maximum figure for a full white picture, and add another 20-30% reserve on top of that. If this is skipped, the wall flickers on a white picture and turns pinkish or reddish — because of the higher forward voltage of the blue and green LEDs, those drop out first when the 5V collapses — and a permanently overloaded supply fails within a few years. The LRS has a trimmer for raising the output voltage slightly: it is normally used to compensate for cable voltage drop, but exceeding the module's datasheet maximum is forbidden.

Alternatives to the LRS-350

If the power supply goes inside the module cabinet and space is tight, the open-frame PCB EPP-200 or the flat, display-designed G-Energy JPS200V is the better form factor. For a larger system feeding many modules on one bus, the RSP-500 gives more power and remote sense. Neither belongs in an outdoor location without a protected cabinet; an IP-rated housing (HLG) is needed there. The order of the decision: where it fits → how much it has to deliver → what environment it operates in.
