Mean Well EPP-200 LED wall component

The EPP series is Mean Well's family of open, green PCB power supplies, characterised specifically by high power density (high output from a small space) — the EPP-200 delivers its 200 watts from a footprint of roughly 10×5 cm. This property makes it suitable for fitting into a tight, enclosed LED module cabinet, where space is scarce but cooling (the cabinet's airflow) is properly resolved.

The family is available in several output voltage versions (12-48V), with built-in PFC. It is important to note that because of the open PCB build the EPP series offers no protection against dust or moisture on its own — that protection has to be provided by the enclosed housing of the module or the cabinet.

Where the EPP-200 sits in an LED wall system

The EPP goes inside the cabinet, behind the modules, typically bolted to the metal rear panel so that the panel also works as a heat sink. Its DC output goes on a short, large-cross-section cable to the cabinet's distribution bus and from there to the modules' power cable. Because it is an open PCB, both shock protection and dust protection come from the cabinet's enclosed housing — the ventilation openings, the fans and the placement of the supply have to work together, otherwise the power supply heats itself.

As a power supply built into a compact, enclosed LED module cabinet, where space is scarce but the cabinet's own cooling/airflow is resolved.

WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR

Because of the open PCB build, the EPP is neither dust-protected nor waterproof on its own — only the enclosed design of the surrounding module/cabinet can provide that, unlike the HLG series with its own IP67 rating.

The EPP-200 in practice

The open build has two practical consequences. One: when the cabinet is opened, the technician works next to a live, bare PCB, so isolation has to be written into the service procedure — this is not a formality but the most common source of accidents when maintaining an LED wall. Two: dust collects on the PCB and can cause leakage currents in a humid environment within a few years, so cleaning the cabinet filters cannot be skipped. When sizing, calculate here too with the consumption of a full white picture, with a 20-30% reserve — a larger supply will not fit into the cabinet afterwards, so this mistake cannot be corrected cheaply.

Alternatives to the EPP-200

If the cabinet was made specifically for an LED display, the G-Energy JPS200V is sized precisely for that mounting position (195×110×30 mm) and comes with a 5V output — because of its 12-48V outputs the EPP can only be used indirectly on many modules. For a cabinet-mounted system where space is not tight, the LRS-350's enclosed housing is safer. Deciding factors: the module's supply voltage and the available mounting depth.
