NovaStar A8s Pro LED receiving card

The A8s Pro is the higher-capacity member of NovaStar's A8s family: a single card is loadable to 512×512 pixels at 60 Hz. The card introduces Multi-Layer Calibration technology, which alongside conventional brightness and colour calibration also generates separate calibration coefficients for image areas in the low grayscale range, improving their uniformity.

Its other functions match the top-tier feature set of the A8s: LED Image Booster (Color Management, 22bit+), HDR10 and HLG support (meeting the SMPTE ST 2084 and ST 2086 standards), seam brightness correction, gamma settings per RGB channel, 90° and free-angle image rotation, and smart module functions (module-based calibration storage, flash management).

The A8s Pro accepts either 40 groups of parallel or 64 groups of serial RGB data (expandable to 128) and carries EMC Class B and RoHS certification.

Where the A8s Pro sits in an LED wall system

It sits in the cabinet at the end of the chain (sending card → Cat5e/Cat6 → card → HUB → module), but with a greater capacity than the other A-series cards, at 512×512 pixels: on a gigabit port — which carries roughly 650,000 pixels at 60 Hz and 8-bit — only 2–3 cards therefore fit, but the same wall needs fewer cards, less Cat6 and fewer points of failure. On the data side it outputs 40 groups of parallel or 64 groups of serial RGB data (expandable to 128), which is exactly the point on a larger cabinet with many data lines. It measures 70×45 mm, so mechanically it drops into the place of an A5s Plus or an A8s. It works with NovaStar senders and NovaLCT.

WHEN IT IS THE RIGHT CHOICE

Higher-resolution indoor LED walls and studio installations of high picture quality, where the standard A8s capacity of 384×384 is already too little but the highest A10s Pro level is not required.

WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR

HDR and several advanced functions require a suitable NovaLCT version and a compatible sending card; the smart module functions need a module with flash memory.

The A8s Pro in practice

Multi-Layer Calibration makes a visible difference on site: alongside conventional calibration it generates separate coefficients for the low grayscale range, which matters in dark scenes and on studio and indoor walls — but you only get this if the calibration data is actually burned onto the card rather than only living in the software. The commissioning procedure is the usual one: load the .rcfgx or run `Smart Settings`, draw the cabinet map on the `Screen Connection` tab, and finally `Save Configuration Files to Hardware`. Because of the 40-group parallel arrangement, when choosing the HUB card you have to check separately how many data lines the cabinet's HUB brings out, since if it brings out fewer, the extra capacity goes unused. The HDR functions need a suitable NovaLCT version and a compatible sending card. When a card is replaced, that cabinet's calibration is lost unless there is a NovaCLB backup or a smart module with flash memory.

Alternatives to the A8s Pro

For a smaller cabinet the A8s (512×384 px) is enough, and cheaper; if HDR is not needed either, the A5s Plus. In a COEX-based system the A8s-N or the CA50E is the compatible direction, the latter offering the greatest single-card capacity at 768×512 pixels. If long-term colour stability is the main consideration (an outdoor installation with wide temperature swings), the A10s Pro's adaptive thermal compensation gives you more than the higher pixel count. In other ecosystems the Colorlight i9 is the comparable fine-pitch card. The deciding factors: the cabinet's resolution, the number of data lines and the quality of dark tones.
