In short

macOS-only "show control" software for theatre, dance, video mapping and installation projects, with timeline-based scene editing.

Millumin · media server / show control software

Millumin content management software

Millumin offers a timeline- and sequencer-based workflow: scenes, animations and media cues can be programmed on a timeline, up to 16K resolution, distributed across several outputs. Because of its built-in video mapping toolkit (perspective transformation, mesh warping) and its DMX/LED strip control options, it is a frequent choice for theatre, dance performance and installation projects too.

Control can also come from many kinds of interactive input (MIDI, OSC, DMX, Kinect, Arduino, gamepad), which fits flexibly into the shifting, cue-based workflow of live performance. An important limitation is that it runs exclusively on macOS, so it cannot be used in a Windows-based control environment.

Where the Millumin sits in an LED wall system

Millumin delivers the picture to the LED processor from the Mac's video output, and also sends and receives signal over Syphon and NDI, while controlling LED strips and lighting fixtures over DMX and Art-Net with the built-in LED Mapping module. The control side is open: MIDI, OSC, DMX, a gamepad, a Kinect and an Arduino can all trigger a scene, which fits the cues called by the stage manager. The scenes sit on a timeline, so the show can be programmed in advance and repeated — this is where it differs from Resolume's live-mixed clip matrix.

WHEN IT IS THE RIGHT CHOICE

On theatre, dance performance and video mapping installation projects, where cue-based scene changes during the performance and a macOS-based working environment are needed.

WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR

The software runs exclusively under macOS — if the project's control environment is Windows-based, this can be a knockout argument right at the start of the design.

The Millumin in practice

The workflow: create the composition at the wall's native resolution, place scenes and media cues on the timeline, set the output mapping, wire the cues to MIDI or OSC, and finally rehearse. Using the HAP codec is the condition for stable playback here too; at high resolution, H.264 produces dropped frames. The most important design constraint is not in the software: the program runs exclusively on macOS, so the control machine and the touring backup machine both have to be Macs — this has to be written into the budget in advance. The licence can be bought both as a subscription (from a weekly fee) and perpetually, which is considerably cheaper for short productions. There is no Hungarian interface or support.

Alternatives to the Millumin

In a Windows-based control environment Millumin is out: for similar cue-based work, Resolume Arena is the option there, and for a theatre team WATCHOUT's timeline is closer in spirit. On a large installation with many outputs, PIXERA or WATCHOUT is the next level. If the content is not pre-programmed but generated from live data, TouchDesigner is the right tool. For simple, scheduled display content, none of them is suitable: a signage system is the right category there.

On its own the Millumin is a component. With us it works inside these displays — design, manufacturing and installation included.
