Dataton WATCHOUT content management software

WATCHOUT consists of three main components: the freely downloadable Producer design and editing application, an Asset Manager content organising tool, and the licensed Media Server(s) that actually play the show back. The system supports an unlimited number of displays and any resolution (4K, 8K, 16K and above), with synchronised, distributed playback across several servers if needed.

WATCHOUT typically appears on high-volume, flagship installations (museums, visitor centres, restaurant and cruise ship event spaces, church spaces), where reliability and long-term, supervised operation matter more than the live, hands-on control flexibility of event technology VJ software.

Where the WATCHOUT sits in an LED wall system

WATCHOUT is a distributed system: the Producer design program runs on a control machine, while the actual playback is done by separate display machines — WATCHPAX units or compatible Windows servers — linked over a gigabit Ethernet network. The video output of every display machine goes to the input of a LED processor or projector, and the system synchronises the picture between the machines to the frame. Content does not travel over the network during playback: Producer distributes the media to the display machines' local disks in advance, so a network failure does not stop the show.

WHEN IT IS THE RIGHT CHOICE

On large-scale installations with many outputs that are operated over the long term (a museum, a visitor centre, a permanent show space), where reliable, supervised, distributed playback is the most important consideration.

WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR

The design program (Producer) is free, but the Media Server component needed for actual playback is licensed, so this has to be built into the project cost at the design stage.

The WATCHOUT in practice

The commissioning sequence: add the display machines to Producer, build the wall's geometry and assign the outputs, drag the media onto the timeline, preload, and finally do a test playback to timecode. The most common failure is not in the software: on an installation running several 4K streams, the SSD RAID0 array behind it behaved unreliably with certain SSD series during simultaneous playback, and that caused the stuttering — storage therefore has to be sized with the same care as the GPU. Theatre users miss the fact that timecode and MIDI control cannot be switched on and off with a single command during rehearsal; the developer confirmed that this is missing from the API. Licensing is tied to a physical USB key, and the virtual-machine-friendly virtual key comes at a surcharge.

Alternatives to the WATCHOUT

For a single-output event mixed live, WATCHOUT is too heavy; Resolume Arena is quicker there. Similar professional-grade alternatives are PIXERA and disguise Designer: the former is built on dedicated server hardware and also offers 3D mapping, while the latter is strong towards XR and virtual production. For simple, scheduled advertising content, however, none of them is justified: a signage system (Xibo, BrightSign) runs unattended there at a fraction of the price.
