The disguise vx media server and rx render node pairing is not an LED processor but the content production/rendering layer in XR studios and virtual productions, complemented by an LED processor (Brompton, NovaStar).

An important distinction: disguise's vx and rx product families are not LED wall processors in the Brompton/NovaStar/Colorlight sense, but media server and dedicated render node platforms providing the content production and compositing layer of the virtual production (ICVFX/XR) workflow. The vx series (the vx 4+, for instance) plays back, mixes and compresses video content: it is characterised by an Intel Xeon CPU, an AMD or newer GPU, up to 128 GB of RAM, 4×12G or 16×3G SDI capture, and 100GbE network outputs.
The rx series (the rx III, for instance) is a dedicated platform for running third-party render engines (primarily Unreal Engine), synchronising the physical and virtual elements over the RenderStream protocol – which is what allows the background on the LED wall to follow the camera's movement in real time.
disguise also offers the OmniCal camera-based calibration system, built primarily for the fast, automated measurement of projection surfaces (rather than LED panels); in LED wall use it is a complement rather than a core function. To actually drive the LED panels (signal processing, HDR, pixel mapping), a dedicated LED processor (a Brompton Tessera or a NovaStar) is always needed behind the disguise system.
Where the vx / rx platform sits in an LED wall system
The vx/rx stands ahead of the LED processor in the chain: the rx render node runs Unreal Engine, taking the camera tracking data over the RenderStream protocol, and the vx media server mixes and composites this and outputs it over SDI or IP to the LED processor (Brompton Tessera, Megapixel HELIOS, NovaStar). Genlock is mandatory here too: the camera, the render node and the processor run from a shared reference, or the camera frustum and the picture on the wall drift apart. The vx never sends a signal directly to the panels — the Tessera or HELIOS receiving card always stays in the chain.
WHEN IT IS THE RIGHT CHOICE
Virtual production (ICVFX/XR) studios and large live events needing real-time, camera-synchronised content rendering and compositing in front of or behind the LED wall – complemented by an LED processor.
WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR
It does not replace the LED processor on its own: the vx/rx produces and renders the content, while a separate LED processor (a Brompton Tessera, for instance) does the actual panel driving (pixel mapping, HDR, calibration); OmniCal is primarily a projection tool, not an LED calibration one.
The vx / rx platform in practice
The cornerstone of commissioning an ICVFX chain is the latency budget: the latency of the tracking, the render, the compositing and the LED processor adds up, and as the camera moves the picture on the wall lags behind — this has to be measured on every element of the system and matched to the camera, not only on the processor. OmniCal camera-based calibration was built primarily for measuring projection surfaces; on an LED wall the geometric and colour calibration of the panels is the LED processor's job (Brompton Hydra), with OmniCal as a complement. Colour management is the other common pitfall: the colour spaces and 3D LUTs of the render, the media server and the processor have to be carried through consistently, or the camera will produce a different colour from the one the wall is showing.
Alternatives to the vx / rx platform
If a real-time, camera-tracked background is not needed — only playback and mapping — Resolume Arena, Dataton WATCHOUT or AV Stumpfl PIXERA solves it at a fraction of the price. For node-based, custom generative content, TouchDesigner. None of them replaces the LED processor, though: driving the panels still calls for a Brompton Tessera SX40/S8 or a Megapixel HELIOS. For a fixed advertising board or a shopfront this whole layer is superfluous: an asynchronous player (a NovaStar Taurus TB40) belongs there.
