What counts as a business sign - and what does not. Business signs, projecting signs and nameplates

A business sign is the surface that identifies the business at its premises or on the shopfront facade: company name, logo, activity, sometimes opening hours. It has three main families: the non-illuminated flat panel; the illuminated (LED) business sign - light box sign, channel letters, LED neon sign; and the programmable display with changeable content. These are competing solutions for the same place on the facade. It is worth distinguishing the business sign from the projecting storefront sign: that hangs perpendicular to the wall on a bracket, and because of the projecting structure it often faces stricter townscape treatment and even public-space rules. Engraved plastic nameplates, office door signs and memorial plaques do not belong here: they are made with different technology, in a different trade. The eight steps of making a business sign, in one place

The process is as follows: (1) establishing requirements - what has to be communicated and from where it is seen; (2) a free site survey - dimensions, facade type, power feed; (3) choosing the technology - light box sign, channel letters or programmable LED; (4) artwork and a visual in both day and night states; (5) the planning notification to the local authority; (6) manufacture; (7) fixing and electrical connection; (8) handover, documentation and training. Steps 3-5 partly overlap, and that is precisely the point: if the notification only starts after the sign is finished, the project bites its own tail, because one rejected design element means redesign and remanufacture. From here on, this article concentrates on what the client has to do, step by step: the client has three jobs - the vector file of the logo, the owner's agreement for the facade, and identifying where the power will be taken from - and the installer handles everything else. Step 1: establishing requirements - six questions you have to answer yourself

A good quotation needs six things. What does the sign have to say: just company name and logo, or prices and opening hours too? Does the content change monthly, or stay the same for years? From how far away is it seen: from the pavement at 5 metres, or from a four-lane road at 40? Does it have to work at night, or is daytime appearance enough? Is the facade a rented or an owned property? And finally: are you planning to expand, for example with a second sign on the side elevation later? Those six answers determine the technology and the size. If the content never changes, a programmable LED sign can do far more than you need; if you run weekly promotions, a fixed light box sign means a new face and a new print at every change.

Step 2: the site survey - what the specialist measures

The free site survey takes 30-60 minutes and records eight pieces of data: the exact size of the available surface; the type and load-bearing capacity of the facade (brick, concrete, external insulation system, glazed shopfront, timber structure); how flat the wall plane is; the location and spare capacity of the nearest power supply; the actual viewing distance and angle; the ambient light conditions (street lighting, neighbouring illuminated signs, the shadow of a canopy); the need for scaffolding or a cherry picker for the fixing; and the exposure that affects wind load. Most of this cannot be judged from a photograph - the wall construction, the spare electrical capacity and the real viewing angle certainly cannot. Without a survey, therefore, only an estimate can be given, which the site conditions then modify; that is exactly why our visit comes with no obligation.

Step 3: choosing the technology - which business sign is right when

There are six real alternatives, and the decision is driven by two questions: does the content change, and how far away does it have to be visible from. For a permanent company name, the light box sign and channel letters are the classic solutions; the halo-lit letter is more understated, so in refined or protected settings it is often the accepted form. In our catalogue, bespoke built-up letters can be ordered from a cap height of 15 cm - that is the binding lower limit, and technically it is the sensible one too: below 100 mm a channel letter is already hard to light evenly, and below 60-80 mm the light source and the return thickness make it unworkable. For smaller lettering, the light box sign gives more even light. LED neon signage belongs in shop windows and interiors, for a decorative effect. If prices, opening hours or promotions are to appear, though, you need a single-colour programmable LED sign or a LED scrolling sign; for images and video, a full-colour display. Step 4: artwork and sizing the cap height. Where the 1 cm ≈ 1.2 metres rule comes from

The visual shows the sign on the real facade in both day and night states - the night view matters at least as much, because the contrast of an illuminated surface is completely different from daytime. Sizing, however, is not a matter of taste. The rule of thumb used in sign making goes back to the legibility research of the United States Sign Council (USSC): 1 inch (2.54 cm) of cap height gives about 10 feet (roughly 3 metres) of comfortable reading distance. Converted to metric that is 1 cm ≈ 1.2 metres, so a company name readable from 12 metres needs a cap height of about 10 cm, from 25 metres 20 cm, and from 50 metres around 40 cm. Two important riders go with it. First: the 1.2 ratio is a DESIGN value, that is, it gives the comfortable reading distance. The just-decipherable limit is roughly three times that - a 10 cm letter can in principle still be puzzled out from 30-35 metres - but you must not design to it: at that point the lettering can only be deciphered with effort, and nobody passing on the street will bother. Second: with poor lighting, an ornate typeface or an oblique sightline, the industry recommendation is 20-30 per cent on top of the design size. For all this, the logo has to be supplied in vector format (AI, EPS, SVG or vector PDF) - a JPG downloaded from a website stays pixellated when enlarged, and letters cannot be cut from it. The design version has to be approved in writing, and manufacture only starts after that.

Step 5: the planning notification and the permissions you need

Installing a business sign is in most places subject to a notification or consent procedure with the local authority. Where such a procedure applies, the work can typically begin once the authority has acknowledged the notification within a set period and has not objected - so it is worth checking the exact deadline locally. What is actually subject to notification in a given municipality, and what size and design limits apply, is set by the local rules; which is why the same sign can be judged differently in two neighbouring municipalities. In a listed or locally protected setting, expect stricter expectations. In a rented shop unit, the owner's written agreement is also needed, and in a block of flats typically that of the owners' meeting or the building management - obtaining these can take several weeks in itself, and does not depend on the authority. Step 6: manufacture - what separates a good sign from a bad one

Manufacturing time depends on technology and size. In our catalogue, a boxed illuminated sign takes 7-10 working days to make and a bespoke, welded metal-bodied built-up letter 14-21 working days - so broadly 2-4 weeks is the realistic frame. Service life is decided in this phase, and it comes down to five things. The first is colour consistency of the light source: the LEDs going into the sign have to come from a single production batch, because a mixed batch gives a surface that looks patchy at night and breaks up into cooler and warmer fields - barely visible by day, immediately obvious after dark. The second is the quality of the power supply and its headroom: a supply running constantly at its limit is the first thing to fail. The third is the right ingress protection and genuinely waterproof cable joints, not insulating tape; three levels have to be separated here: indoor LED modules are IP31, sheltered outdoor and boxed builds run IP44-IP54 - in our catalogue the 100x50 cm boxed illuminated sign is IP54 - while outdoors the expectation is IP65, with IP67 or a sealed, ventilated housing for the power supply. The fourth is a front-serviceable, modular construction, because that is what allows a faulty module to be changed without dismantling the facade. The fifth is choosing the right brightness: the professional minimum is 4,500-5,000 nits with automatic brightness control; our own outdoor LED modules deliver 5,000-8,000 nits. Note that local rules may cap the permitted brightness of advertising displays, particularly after dark, so check what applies at your location. Indoors the requirement is 600-1,200 nits, and our own indoor modules deliver 800-1,200 nits.

Step 7: fixing and electrical connection by facade type

The method of fixing depends on the facade. Brick or concrete walls can take direct anchoring. On an insulated facade, though, an anchor drilled into the insulation gives no durable load capacity: here you need a fixing that reaches through to the load-bearing wall, sealed and free of cold bridging. If that is skipped, the load of the sign sits on the insulation layer, the fixing can give way over time, and water can get behind the insulation through the open holes - and putting it right afterwards means repairing the facade, not just the sign. A glazed shopfront calls for a standoff, bonded or clamped system. On the electrical side, a separate feed protected by its own circuit breaker is ideal, with waterproof joints outdoors, plus a dusk switch or time switch so the sign does not depend on the shop's main switch - otherwise it stays dark after closing, exactly when it would be worth the most. On programmable or full-colour builds, the power supply and the feed always have to be sized to peak consumption, not average.

Step 8: handover, documentation and training

At handover you should receive four things: the warranty certificate with the exact terms, the technical datasheet (size, power, brightness, ingress protection, module type used), a sketch of the electrical connection, and - on a programmable sign - the credentials for the control software. Training is part of handover with us, not a separate item: we show you on site how to load content, set schedules and adjust brightness, until you are confident with it. Ask for the exact type designation of the module used as well, because that is what makes it replaceable years later. After handover we support you by phone and remote desktop, including after the warranty period expires - most enquiries are not faults but questions about operation.

How long does the whole thing take, and where does it usually slip?

A realistic schedule for an outdoor, illuminated business sign subject to notification: survey within a few days of the enquiry, visual and itemised quotation a further 2-5 working days, manufacture 2-4 weeks after approval, installation one working day for a smaller sign or 2-3 days for a larger surface needing scaffolding. Four to eight weeks in total. If the sign is indoors, simple in build and not subject to notification, the same comes to 1-3 weeks. Slippage arises in three places, and all three are avoidable. The first is artwork approval: if the logo is not available in vector form, or the decision rests with several people, this alone can stretch to weeks. The second is the notification, if it only starts after manufacture - the authority's own deadline for acknowledgement may be short, but assembling the documentation, obtaining the owner's and building management's agreements, and any redesign take several times as long. The third is the power supply: if new cabling is needed up to the facade, that has to be scheduled with an electrician, and it tends to come to light on installation day at the worst possible moment.

What determines the price of a business sign

A specific figure cannot responsibly be given without a survey, but the pricing logic is transparent. Seven items drive it: the size of the surface (in m², or for channel letters the number and height of the letters), the technology (non-illuminated flat panel, light box sign, channel letters, programmable LED), the outdoor build and the ingress protection, the complexity of the support structure and fixing (standoff brackets, canopy, penetrations through external insulation), the length of the electrical installation, the circumstances of installation (scaffolding, cherry picker, traffic management), and the control system, if changeable content is needed. Two pricing bases exist, and it is worth knowing: channel letters are usually costed per character and light box signs and displays per square metre - which is why a short company name can be more favourable in letters and a long one in a box. Always ask for an itemised quotation in which the sign, the support structure, the electrical work and the installation appear on separate lines - that way two quotations can be compared and there are no surprises afterwards.

Running it: consumption, cleaning, warranty

Running an illuminated business sign is cheaper than most people expect. A specific example from our own range: a 100x50 cm boxed illuminated sign draws 25-30 W, and the LED strip inside it is rated for 50,000 hours; across the light box signs and framed panels in our catalogue, that comes to 30-70 W/m² of illuminated area. Illuminated built-up letters work out at 3-8 W per letter (the figure from our stainless steel built-up letter product page), so an eight-letter company name runs on broadly the consumption of a single traditional light bulb. A full-colour LED display is a multiple of that: average operating consumption is 150-300 W/m², and within that our own module datasheets give 220-280 indoors and 200-300 W/m² outdoors. At peak - on a full white image - reckon on 600-800 W/m² generally, and 580-650 W/m² on our own indoor modules; the power supply always has to be sized to that peak, not to the average. Exact consumption is always on the specific product's datasheet, item by item; our calculators can also be used for estimates. Cleaning outdoors needs doing once or twice a year, to remove dust and pollen, with a non-scratch cleaner. On the warranty, the important question is not primarily its length but whether there is service backing and a supply of spare parts behind it: with modular construction, a repair means changing a module, not taking the whole sign down.

Business sign or LED display? When it is worth moving on

There is a simple decision question worth working through. Look at how many times over the past year you would have changed the content of the sign - a new price, a seasonal promotion, a new service. If that would have happened more than four times, then with a fixed sign every occasion means a new face, a new print and a new site visit, and those add up: at that point it is worth weighing the premium for the programmable solution against them. If, on the other hand, the company name and logo stay unchanged for years, the fixed illuminated sign is the better deal: it uses less power, it has fewer things to go wrong, and there is nothing to operate. On many sites the combination is right: a permanent illuminated company name on the facade with a smaller, changeable LED surface beside it for the current message. What to bring to the first meeting

Five things speed up the process most. One: the vector file of the logo, or at least the information about who has it. Two: a photograph of the facade taken so that the neighbouring buildings are visible too - that is what reveals the real viewing distance and the ambient light pollution. Three: the approximate size of the available surface. Four: the state of the owner's or building management's agreement, if the property is not your own. Five: the decision on whether you also want changeable content. With those five pieces of information, a concrete direction can be given on the day of the survey, and an itemised quotation follows within a few days. Expert tip

Start preparing the planning notification on the day the visual is approved, not after manufacture. The authority's own acknowledgement deadline may be short, but assembling the documentation and obtaining the owner's or building management's agreements takes far longer - if that thread runs in parallel with the 2-4 weeks of manufacture, it does not delay handover; if it starts afterwards, a single rejected design element means redesign and remanufacture. The same is true of the power supply: have the cabling up to the facade done during manufacture, rather than discovering it on installation day. And ask for it in writing in the quotation that the structure should be front-serviceable - that is the detail that decides, five years from now, whether changing a faulty module takes twenty minutes or a cherry picker plus facade dismantling.

Common mistakes

1. Leaving the planning notification until after manufacture - the design limits in the local rules then come to light, and the finished sign has to be redesigned. 2. Sizing the cap height to the available space rather than the actual reading distance - below the 1 cm ≈ 1.2 m (USSC) design rule of thumb, the company name is no longer comfortably readable, merely decipherable. 3. Designing the letter size to the decipherability limit (about three times the 1.2 ratio) rather than the comfortable reading distance - the lettering then passes on paper, but nobody reads it from the street. 4. Fixing the sign to an externally insulated facade with an anchor drilled into the insulation, instead of a sealed fixing that reaches the load-bearing wall. 5. Asking for channel letters below 15 cm high: the smallest orderable cap height in our catalogue is 15 cm, and below 100 mm even lighting is no longer achievable. 6. Running the sign off the shop's main switch, with no dusk switch or time switch - so it is dark after closing, exactly when it would be worth the most. 7. Having the logo only as a JPG: enlarged it stays pixellated, letters cannot be cut from it, and approval slips by weeks. 8. Sizing the power supply to average rather than peak consumption - on a full-colour display the governing figure is the 600-800 W/m² peak, not the 150-300 W/m² operating average.
