What does an illuminated business sign cost? The price, item by item
The price of an illuminated business sign is not one number but the sum of nine separate items - and the most expensive items are often not on the sign itself. This article works through what costs money when an illuminated business sign is made, from the size through the support structure to the electrical connection.

Why there is no price list for business signs, and why that is good for you
An illuminated business sign is a bespoke product: no two facades take the same sign. So manufacturers do not issue a price list but an itemised quotation after a survey. That feels inconvenient at first, because it makes comparison harder - in reality it is precisely what protects you from hidden costs. If a quotation contains a single line saying 'illuminated business sign' with one total, it does not tell you whether the support structure, the electrical connection, the cherry-picker installation or the visual needed for the consent procedure are included. Comparing business sign prices is only a meaningful exercise if you are comparing the same items. The breakdown below gives you exactly that: nine items, every one of which should appear on its own line in your quotation. If one is missing, that does not mean it is free - it means it has not been priced yet.
The four basic builds sold as 'illuminated business signs': light box sign, routed panel, channel letters, LED neon
The market understands four sharply different structures by 'illuminated business sign'. The light box sign is a sealed aluminium housing with LED modules inside and a backlit opal acrylic front - the classic, continuous illuminated surface. The routed panel is solid aluminium or composite sheet from which the lettering and logo are cut out, with the openings closed from behind with acrylic, so only the lettering glows and the background stays dark. With bespoke channel letters, each letter is a small light box in its own right, with its own housing and its own supply cable. A LED neon sign is made from bent silicone tube in a continuous line, for handwritten logos and indoor atmosphere. The fifth structure is no longer static: a LED display sign is itself a pixel matrix, on which the message can be changed in software. Item 1: the size and proportions of the illuminated surface
Size is the most obvious cost factor, but it does not behave linearly. Manufacture works from base sheets and standard profile lengths, so a few centimetres of difference can mean a whole sheet of waste - or save one. Do not give the size by instinct; work it back from reading distance. The sign trade has one widely used rule of thumb for this, which spread from American professional practice (the United States Sign Council): 1 inch (2.54 cm) of cap height stays comfortably and effectively readable up to about 10 feet (roughly 3 metres). Converted to metric, every centimetre of cap height covers about 1.2 metres of comfortable reading distance. Importantly, this is a design ratio, not an upper bound: the same legibility tables put the just-decipherable limit at about three times the comfortable distance, but you must not size to that. We use the same design rule for sizing channel letters and neon signs, so the calculations are directly comparable. The formula works both ways: divide the viewing distance in metres by 1.2 and you get the required cap height in centimetres. A company name to be read comfortably from the road at 30 metres therefore needs a cap height of roughly 25 cm, at 12 metres 10 cm, and at 50 metres about 40 cm - and it is this cap height that determines the size of the sign, not the other way round. An oversized sign punishes you twice: its surface costs more and it is heavier, so it also demands a stronger support structure.
Item 2: the build - why letters cost more than a box
For the same lettering size, the light box sign carries the most favourable price per square metre, because only one housing, one power supply and one row of fixing points have to be made. The routed panel costs more: routing is machine time, and every cut-out opening has to be closed with acrylic and sealed individually. Individually made channel letters are the most expensive build, and there is a structural reason: every letter gets its own housing, its own LED strip, its own supply cable and its own drilling point, and the installation needs a fixing template accurate to the millimetre, or the lettering will sit crooked on the wall. A fifteen-letter company name is therefore not one product but fifteen small products - and it behaves that way in the price. LED neon sits between the light box sign and channel letters, but its serviceability is worse: a damaged length of tube generally has to be replaced whole rather than patched.
Item 3: light source, power supply and evenness of light
The quality of the LED module is the item with the widest spread in the market, and the one where the difference is hardest to see from outside - in the first week every sign glows nicely. The difference shows up two or three years later: a weak module fades patchily, its colour temperature drifts, and the sign becomes 'holey'. So it is worth asking within what narrow range of colour temperature - that is, to what binning tolerance - the modules are selected: LEDs are graded at the factory by luminous flux and colour temperature, and if batches from different classes end up in one sign, the difference is visible at handover and grows later. Evenness of light is also affected by module density and the depth of the housing: with too sparse a module layout, the pattern of the LEDs shows through the front. And the power supply should never be sized to its maximum load: a supply running with no headroom runs hotter, and heat accelerates the ageing of every electronic component.
Item 4: the housing material and ingress protection
Ingress protection appears at three sharply distinct levels on an illuminated business sign, and all three have to be asked about separately in the quotation. An exposed outdoor position calls for IP65: a first digit of 6 means full dust protection and a second digit of 5 means resistance to water jets - our own outdoor LED module datasheets also give IP65. This is not an optional extra but the threshold below which the sign can be destroyed by a single wet autumn. Indoor LED modules, by contrast, are IP31 according to our datasheets, and they really are cheaper: indoors that is enough. Between the two sits the third level, the sheltered outdoor or boxed build, where IP44-IP54 occurs - typically where an eave, an arcade or a shopfront protects the surface from direct precipitation. The power supply is a separate item on the list: it needs an IP67 build or a sealed, ventilated, serviceable housing, because the supply is the most common point of failure. If a quotation says only 'outdoor build', ask for the protection rating of the module and the power supply separately. The housing is typically an aluminium profile frame, the rear panel aluminium composite sheet, the illuminated front opal acrylic. The thickness of the acrylic matters: on a large surface, too thin a front can bow over time, and the bow shows immediately in the light distribution. Paint and film are cost factors too - outdoor, UV-resistant cast film is more expensive but holds its colour far longer than a cheaper film intended for indoor use on a south-facing facade.
Item 5: fixing, height, structural loads - the line most often left out
This is the item most people leave out of their own mental arithmetic, yet on a facade sign it is a serious sum. The wall construction matters: fixing into solid brick or reinforced concrete is simple, whereas on an insulated facade you have to reach the load-bearing wall through the insulation, with standoff brackets, avoiding cold bridging and water ingress. On an outdoor, projecting sign, wind load is a sizing question too - a large-area sign held off the wall is not decoration but a structure. Add to that the working height: as soon as the sign's position can no longer be reached safely from the ground, scaffolding or a cherry picker is needed, which is a day-rate plant item, and arranging the visit takes time too. The exact threshold is set jointly by the height of the facade, the size of the sign and health and safety requirements, so this always has to be settled at the survey. For a double-sided projecting sign, the bracket and the structural work mean the price is not far short of that of two separate signs.
Item 6: artwork and production preparation
Manufacture requires vector artwork. If all that exists of the logo is a low-resolution JPG or an old business card, it has to be redrawn as vectors - that is a work item in its own right, and it appears on a separate line in many quotations. This also covers the visual: a design overlaid on a photograph of the facade, showing the sign at true scale. That is not a luxury, for two reasons. First, it is the only point at which you can still make changes for free - altering a manufactured sign means new manufacture. Second, the local authority's consent procedure will typically ask for a visual anyway, so it has to be produced regardless. Many manufacturers provide the site survey and the visual free of charge; it is worth asking, because this varies from quotation to quotation.
Item 7: installation and electrical connection
An illuminated business sign is electrical equipment, so it needs a power supply and a proper connection. The biggest hidden cost usually arises here: if there is no separate circuit brought out on the facade at the sign's position, cabling has to be run - chasing the wall, drilling through, possibly routing through an internal room. Depending on the site, this item can amount to a noticeable share of the sign's price, and nobody can say in advance without a survey. It is worth asking for a time switch or a dusk switch at the same time: the sign then lights only from dusk until a set hour after closing, which spares both service life and consumption. Handover should include a functional test and the setting of the switching times.
Item 8: consents, notifications and permissions
The fear of officialdom is justified but manageable. Whether an illuminated sign can go on a facade, and at what size, is set by the local authority, and the specific rule that applies to you is in the local rules: in many municipalities a planning notification or consent procedure has to be completed before a business sign is installed. Requirements vary from one municipality to the next - they can extend from size and the method of illumination all the way to the typeface - so the authoritative answer always comes from the relevant local authority's design officer rather than from an online summary. Three further points that often come as a surprise: if the sign reaches over public space, a public space use agreement is also needed; in a rented property, the owner's written agreement is required; and in a listed or protected setting you should expect considerably stricter treatment. Obtaining consent is not necessarily expensive, but it takes time, and that has to be built into the project schedule. Item 9: warranty, service and running costs
With the warranty, the length is not the only question; the content is. Ask item by item whether it covers the LED module, the power supply, the labour and the call-out - because if it covers only the part, then on a sign at height the larger cost of the repair, the cherry picker and the labour hours, falls on you. The second question is spare-part supply: will the same module be available in three years, and does the manufacturer hold regional stock of it. Reading the service-life figure correctly matters too: the 100,000 operating hours that appear consistently on our module datasheets is not a burn-out deadline but the number of operating hours for which brightness stays above a stated fraction - on LED module datasheets, typically the L50 figure. At 12 hours of lighting a day, 100,000 hours covers more than twenty years of operation, while practical service life is decided by heat, the brightness setting and maintenance. Running the sign is itself cheap: a LED illuminated sign consumes considerably less than old fluorescent and neon-tube solutions, and consumption can be calculated in advance. A static illuminated business sign or a LED display?
The decision is not a matter of taste but of operation: how often does the message change? A company name and logo stay the same for years, so a static build suits them - a light box sign, a routed panel or channel letters. If, however, the price, the promotion or the opening hours change weekly, then a static sign means new manufacture or a new vinyl at every change, and over a few years those add up to the price of the more expensive but programmable LED sign. In practice the best balance is often the hybrid: a static, illuminated company name on top with a narrow LED band beneath it for the changing information. That combination costs less than a full-surface LED display while keeping the option of daily updates. How to read two business sign quotations against each other
A comparable quotation should contain these eight lines: the build and exact overall dimensions of the sign; the type of LED module and the power draw in watts; the ingress protection level separately for the module and for the power supply; the support structure and the method of fixing; the extent of the electrical connection (from where to where); the equipment used for work at height; the artwork and the visual; and finally the length and content of the warranty. If two quotations differ widely, in most cases it is not that one manufacturer is 'expensive' but that the two quotations do not cover the same thing - typically the cheaper one is missing the support structure, the connection or the cherry picker. The right move is not to haggle but to have the cheaper quotation completed with the same items, and then look at the total.
Where you can legitimately save - and where you cannot
Legitimate places to save: matching the size to the standard sheet and profile dimensions used in manufacture; choosing a simpler build if the effect is there anyway (a well executed routed panel is often more elegant than a mediocre set of letters); ordering several signs at once, because one visit and one plant hire covers them all; and limiting the operating hours with a time switch. Where you must not save: on ingress protection, because an IP31 indoor module fails quickly in an exposed outdoor position; on the support structure, because that is a question of things falling and of liability; and on the power supply. Nor is it saving to accept the cheapest quotation from a manufacturer who will not supply you a replacement module in three years - that sign is then not repairable but replaceable.
How long does it take?
An average-sized illuminated business sign for a facade typically takes 4-8 weeks from survey to handover - the same lead time we reckon with in the process of making an illuminated sign, and the same applies to an outdoor, illuminated projecting sign that requires a planning notification. The time typically breaks down as follows: the site survey and the visual together take a few days, the client approval round likewise, manufacture two to four weeks, and installation half a day to a day. Obtaining consent can run in parallel, but on its own it can take 2-4 weeks, and if it slips it pushes the whole project. For a bespoke, large or public-space sign, the full lead time can stretch to two or three months. Anyone timing this for a season or an opening should plan backwards from the opening date and allow extra for consents. Manufacturing time cannot be compressed indefinitely: the curing times for painting, drying and sealing are a physical limit, not a scheduling question. Expert tip
Before you ask for a quotation, work the cap height back from the reading distance. The rule of thumb used in the sign trade is a design ratio: 1 cm of cap height covers about 1.2 metres of comfortable reading distance, so dividing the viewing distance in metres by 1.2 gives you the required cap height in centimetres - 10 cm for 12 metres, 25 cm for 30 metres, about 40 cm for 50 metres. The just-decipherable limit is roughly three times that, but it is an upper bound, not a design target, so never size to it. Only then give the size of the sign - and ask for two prices for the same sign: one at your own dimensions and one adjusted to the standard sheet and profile sizes used in manufacture. A few centimetres of difference often saves a whole sheet of waste, while on the facade the difference is imperceptible. On the same sheet of paper, ask for the IP ratings too, separately for the module and for the power supply.
Common mistakes
1. Asking only for the price of the sign, not the support structure, the electrical connection and the work at height - these emerge afterwards, mid-job, when there is no alternative left. 2. Giving the size by instinct instead of a cap height worked back from reading distance: the sign is then either unreadable from the road or needlessly large and heavy. 3. Sizing the cap height to the just-decipherable limit rather than the comfortable reading distance - so the sign is readable on paper but not at a glance on the move. 4. Having an indoor build fitted in an exposed outdoor position because it was cheaper: indoor LED modules are IP31, while outdoors you need IP65 - a sign with the wrong rating does not survive even its first wet season well. 5. Not asking separately about the power supply's rating, when it needs an IP67 build or a sealed, ventilated housing - the supply is the most common point of failure. 6. Not asking about spare-part supply, so that in three years a single faulty module means the whole sign has to be replaced rather than repaired. 7. Skipping the local authority's notification procedure, so that the already installed sign has to be altered or taken down afterwards - the most expensive kind of saving. 8. Having the power supply sized to its maximum load with no headroom, which leads to heating and accelerated ageing.
