An edge LED strip is a flexible, waterproof LED ribbon used to light building facades, stair flights and public-realm elements decoratively. The IP67 silicone sleeve gives full water resistance — not merely protection against spray, but the ability to be briefly submerged, at the edge of a drainage channel filled with rainwater, for instance. The RGB LEDs can display 16 million colours and play animations, and with the Wi-Fi controller they can be reprogrammed at any time from a smartphone app.

Coping and facade lighting

How is an edge LED strip used for facade lighting?

Laid into an aluminium U-profile carrier, the LED strip creates an even band of light along building copings, under stair balustrades, on columns and around terrace edges. The aluminium profile both holds the strip and provides a heat-dissipating surface, which extends its life, and the installation also ends up tidier, with a straighter line, than a strip laid loose.

Control options

What control options are available for the edge LED strip?

The Wi-Fi controller allows a bespoke colour, animation and schedule to be set from a smartphone app, including automatic changes according to the time of day. Optionally it can also be run from a DMX controller, which allows professional light-show integration at larger events. For a longer run, several reels have to be linked in series, with the controller driving a single uniform display across one channel.

Why quality matters in a permanent outdoor light source

Decorative facade lighting typically runs for years without interruption, in rain, in frost and under UV load, and on poor-quality strips that are not genuinely IP67 rated water ingress is common, leading to short circuits and early failure. The strip we supply is made with a genuine closed-cell silicone sleeve, and the cut and connection points are protected by separate end caps so that the rating is preserved after installation as well. The LEDs are matched to the same bin, so there is no visible colour variation along a long run built up from several reels — a frequent problem with cheaper products made from mixed production batches.

Operation, power draw and expandability

The 24-volt system draws little power; running an average facade section through the night costs a modest amount each month, and we can give the exact figure once the planned length is known. The Wi-Fi app is so simple to use that if you can write an email on your phone you will be able to handle this confidently too, changing colour, starting an animation or setting a schedule in a couple of minutes. The system can also be extended afterwards if a longer run or more zones are needed later: you simply add further reels and, where necessary, repeat power injection points to the existing system.

How long a run can be driven from a single controller?

A 24 V controller unit will generally drive up to 10–15 metres of RGB LED strip reliably without voltage drop. For a longer run, a repeat power injection point has to be inserted every 10 metres and the system split across two controllers.

Can the edge LED strip be cut to length?

Yes — the strip can be shortened at the marked cutting points, at every third LED (every 5 cm). The cut ends have to be sealed with a silicone end cap to preserve the IP67 rating.

How much does a typical facade run consume in a month?

The consumption of the 24-volt system depends on the length; running an average facade section of a few tens of metres through the night typically costs a modest amount each month.

How long does the strip last outdoors in continuous use?

The rated life of the quality LEDs is around 100,000 operating hours, which can mean 10 years and more in evening and overnight operation with proper maintenance.

Will it cope with cold winters, rain and snow?

Yes — the IP67 silicone sleeve gives full water resistance, so snow, rain and frost cause no problem, provided the cut ends are properly sealed.

Can I control the colours and animations easily from my phone?

Yes — the app that comes with the Wi-Fi controller has a simple interface, and we provide training at handover, so you can set the colours and the schedule confidently within minutes.
