How backlit technology works

How does a rear-illuminated advertising sign work?

The LED strips sit on the surface behind the polycarbonate panel and throw their light towards it. The diffusing property of the polycarbonate produces an even, pleasantly glowing appearance. The artwork is applied to the outer face of the panel in translucent print, and the internal light shines through it. This technology ensures that the sign reads as a uniform, homogeneous surface of light rather than as a set of individual LED sources, which is aesthetically far more refined than a raw LED-module solution with no diffusing cover.

How to choose the size

Why is 120×40 cm the most widespread size?

The 3:1 proportion is ideal for most short company names: with a name of 8–12 characters the letters come out 30–35 cm high, which is comfortably readable from 20 metres. If the company name is longer (14+ characters), we recommend a 160×40 cm or 120×60 cm version instead. When choosing the size we always take into account the planned mounting height of the sign and the typical viewing distance from the street, so that the character size really is optimal.

Quality that stands up to hard winters and hot summers

The outdoor illuminated sign market is full of cheap boards that yellow or crack quickly, so on our backlit build we pay particular attention to the UV stabilisation of the polycarbonate panel and to the quality of the LED strips. The LED modules used pass our own quality control and are matched for light colour within a batch, so the illumination stays uniform across the whole face of the sign even years later. The IP65 aluminium housing is guaranteed to operate between -30°C and +65°C, so neither winter frost nor a summer heatwave affects the operation or the brightness.

Running the sign, and payback

The sign is extremely simple to run: a mains connection and optional photocell automation are all that is needed, with no software and no app. At 30–35 W, 10–12 hours of operation a day comes to only 9–13 kWh a month, a negligible energy cost for most small businesses against a surface that works day and night, with no days off, for the visibility of the brand. The payback typically comes from increased evening and night-time visibility and from the extra footfall that a clear point of navigation generates.

Can a double-sided backlit advertising sign be ordered at 120×40 cm?

Yes — in the double-sided version artwork is applied to both sides of the polycarbonate panel, with LED illumination on both faces. That is particularly recommended for a street-facing entrance approached from two directions.

How long does the backlit illuminated sign take to manufacture?

7–10 working days once the artwork is approved. In urgent cases express manufacture in 4–5 working days is available for a surcharge — ask us by phone or email.

What is the expected life of the sign, and what is covered by warranty?

The LED strips and the UV-resistant polycarbonate panel give 8–12 years of maintenance-free operation, and we provide a manufacturer's warranty on the LEDs and the power supply.

Who installs the sign, and is any consent needed?

Installation is carried out by our own fitting team. For a facade-mounted company sign a planning notification or consent from the local authority is usually required, and we help with that process too.
