Choosing LED video wall size: how to size your display correctly
A practical guide to determining LED video wall size from viewing distance, content type and aspect ratio, with real-world examples.

When people plan a LED video wall for a shop, an office or an event, most start by asking how much space there is on the wall. Yet the correct order is the reverse: you first have to decide from where and at what distance the image will be viewed, and from that follows how large a surface and what pixel pitch is needed. As a rule of thumb, the comfortable viewing distance in metres is 2.5-3 times the pixel pitch expressed in millimetres - a badly sized LED video wall will either be too small to be clearly visible from the back rows, or needlessly expensive because you are paying for a fine resolution nobody ever sees from that close. Viewing distance is the starting point
As a rule of thumb, the minimum comfortable viewing distance in metres is roughly three times the pixel pitch expressed in millimetres. A wall at 2.5 mm pixel pitch is therefore worth viewing from about 7.5 metres; any closer and the grid becomes visible. If you know that viewers will typically be 3-5 metres from the wall - at the entrance to a shop, for example - then a pixel pitch of around 1.5-1.9 mm is the range to think about. For event spaces where the stage is viewed from 10-15 metres, 2.9-3.9 mm is quite sufficient and saves a significant sum.
Indoor and outdoor differences
Indoors, where viewers can come closer to the surface and brightness is more restrained (600-1,000 nits), a finer pixel pitch is worth choosing, because detail matters. Outdoors, by contrast, strong sunlight calls for higher brightness, a minimum of 4,500-5,000 nits, typically with modules at 4-10 mm pixel pitch and automatic brightness control, since the viewing distance is greater too - drivers see a roadside advertising surface from 20-50 metres. Content type also affects the size
It makes a difference whether you want to display a static logo, fast-cut video or small-print textual information such as menu prices or market data. With text content, character size and resolution have to be in step, otherwise it will be illegible at a distance. With video and dynamic content the tolerance is greater, because movement masks small pixel imperfections. If you mainly plan brand presentation, corporate films or event coverage, a larger, less fine resolution works perfectly well and is significantly cheaper.
Expert tip: assess the actual viewing angle too
Expert tip: take account not only of the distance but of the viewing angle. If the wall is mounted high, or viewers typically approach from the side, the apparent size can be smaller than it would be with a straight-on view. In that case it is worth choosing a slightly larger surface or a finer pixel pitch than a bare distance calculation would suggest. Aspect ratio: 16:9 or a custom size
One of the great advantages of a LED video wall over a projector or an LCD video wall is that you are not tied to the standard 16:9 ratio. Because we build from modules, virtually any width-to-height combination can be assembled, whether 21:9 panoramic, square or even an L-shaped layout. That is particularly useful for reception walls and business spaces, where the available wall is rarely exactly 16:9. It is worth deciding the ratio at the design stage, though, because extending it afterwards is awkward and expensive.
Typical sizes by location
A reception or corporate lobby wall is typically 2-4 metres wide with a 1.5-2 mm pixel pitch. A retail shop window wall is around 1.5-3 metres, outdoor-rated, at 3-4 mm pixel pitch for the higher brightness. Event, concert or conference walls can be 6-10 metres wide at 2.6-3.9 mm pixel pitch, since the audience sits further back. Roadside billboard-scale advertising surfaces run to 8-20 square metres at 6-10 mm pixel pitch, since there brightness and visibility from a distance are the priority rather than fine detail. These ranges are starting points; the final size is always adapted to the characteristics of the specific site, taking account of the shape of the wall and the space available.
A common mistake: needlessly fine pitch
The most common sizing mistake is for the buyer to choose the finest possible pixel pitch to be on the safe side, when from the actual viewing distance that never repays itself in experience, only in cost. On an event wall viewed from 10 metres, a 1.2 mm pitch gives no better appearance than 2.9 mm yet can cost two or three times as much. It is therefore always worth starting from the real viewing distance rather than the logic of the finer the better.
Do not underestimate the weight and the support structure
As size increases, so does not only the price but the demand on the support structure. A 10 square metre indoor LED video wall can weigh 150-300 kilograms depending on the module type, which the receiving wall or a standalone steel frame has to carry. On outdoor walls exposed to wind load this is even more critical, and a structural calculation may be needed. It is therefore worth agreeing the sizing in parallel with the site survey, to avoid surprises later that can force the whole project to be rescheduled if they only emerge on installation day.

For accurate sizing, the first step is to estimate the typical viewing distance and calculate the recommended pixel pitch range from it. We then examine the size of the available wall and the desired aspect ratio, so that the modules fit without cutting or a needlessly large margin. What it costs to correct a sizing mistake afterwards
If the size or pixel pitch of an already installed LED video wall turns out to be wrong - the grid being visible from close up, for instance - the fix almost always requires replacing the entire surface, because modules of differing pixel pitch cannot be mixed. That is exactly why it pays to start with a thorough, free site survey rather than to correct a badly sized investment afterwards, which can mean losing the whole sum. Bringing in an experienced specialist at the design stage is far cheaper than a later replacement.
Expandability: plan ahead if you expect growth
If you know the wall may grow in future - because of a retail chain expanding or a larger event space being created - it is worth choosing a module type now that can later be extended from the same production run. On modular systems this is technically feasible, but it is only advisable if you order subsequently from the same manufacturer and the same type, otherwise colour differences and alignment problems can arise.

Expert tip: before you decide finally on pixel pitch, ask for a demonstration or a sample panel and look at it in person from the planned viewing distance. Images shown on a screen or in a catalogue are often misleading, because they do not accurately convey how the combination of real light conditions and distance works. A few minutes of demonstration on site produces a far more reliable decision than relying on numbers alone.
A common misconception: bigger is always better
Many people think that the larger the LED video wall the greater the impact, yet a badly sized, oversized surface in a small space is oppressive rather than eye-catching. The right size always follows the proportions of the space, the viewing distance and the nature of the content, not the maximum the available wall could take. A well-proportioned, correctly sized display creates a far more professional impression than an oversized surface that dominates the room.
