Work through this in order and the sign will be right the first time: identify which of the two readers you are addressing, choose the construction that suits the elevation, calculate the letter height from the reading distance, establish what the wall will actually accept as a fixing, set the night-time brightness deliberately rather than by default, and arrange the maintenance around a 307-kilometre service distance that is shorter than most clients assume.

Two signage worlds sit within three kilometres of each other in Slovenska Bistrica and they have almost nothing in common. Around Trg svobode and the streets running off it, the frontages are narrow, the buildings are old, several are protected, and the reader is a pedestrian at three or four metres who has already decided to come here. Along Partizanska ulica and the industrial ground around Impol, and again out towards the motorway and the Pragersko road, the reader is in a vehicle at thirty metres or more, is looking for an entrance rather than a shop, and has never been to the address before. Buying the wrong one of these two signs is the commonest and most expensive error in the category, and it usually happens because the design was chosen from a catalogue rather than from the position it will occupy.

Identify the reader first, then design

The pedestrian who has arrived, and the driver who is still looking

The pedestrian in the old town has already found you. They are three or four metres away, standing still, and the sign's job is to confirm and to look right — modest letter height, careful proportion, a construction that respects the elevation. Overscaling here is not impressive; it is conspicuous, and on a protected street it may not be permitted at all. The driver on Partizanska ulica or approaching from the motorway has not found you. They are thirty metres out at speed, dividing attention between the road and a name they have only ever seen in an email, and every metre they travel while deciding is a metre closer to missing the entrance. That reader needs a large, high-contrast name and nothing else on the illuminated element — no telephone number, no list of products, no strapline. Put the secondary information at the gate where the vehicle has stopped. Decide which of these two people your sign is for, because a design that tries to serve both serves neither.

Choose the construction that suits the elevation

Letters, panel, halo, or a totem where nothing may be drilled

Individual illuminated letters are the right construction for the town centre. Each character is its own sealed body lit from within, the wall remains visible between them, and the result reads as a name rather than as a lit rectangle applied to a historic facade. Where a building is protected, this is frequently the only illuminated construction that stands a chance of being accepted. A lit fascia panel is the sensible choice for an industrial or retail unit, where an evenly lit rectangle read across a yard is precisely the requirement and there is no elevation to defer to. Halo illumination — opaque characters lit from behind onto the wall — is the restrained middle option, clearly legible at close and medium range without a bright face at all. And where the building will not accept a fixing, or the lease forbids one, the sign moves off the wall: a lit totem at the entrance, a bracket sign fixed into mortar joints rather than into the stone face, or lettering on glass lit from within the reveal. All three are proper answers, not compromises.

Calculate the letter height from the distance

Three centimetres per metre, plus a margin for a moving reader

Begin with a measurement rather than a drawing. Roughly three centimetres of capital height serves each metre of reading distance for a stationary reader, and a driver needs more because they are reading while doing other things. A shopfront on a town-centre street read from four metres wants characters of twelve to fifteen centimetres. A unit name on an approach road read from thirty-five metres wants a metre or more of character height, and if the available fascia cannot carry that, the sign will not be read from the road and the money is better spent on a totem nearer the entrance. Contrast does as much work as size and costs nothing. A pale character on a dark face survives rain, dusk and the low winter sun coming off the Pohorje slopes; mid-tone on mid-tone vanishes in all three. Test the intended combination on a printed mock-up at the actual distance before anything is manufactured — twenty minutes and a sheet of card have saved a great many signs from being remade.

Establish what the wall will take

Industrial elevations are made of things a shopfront is not, and each one dictates its own fixing. Profiled steel sheeting cannot carry a load at the trough; the fasteners have to land on the crown and, for anything of size, on the purlins behind it, which means the setting-out is governed by the building's structural grid rather than by where the name looks best. A composite sandwich panel is worse: driving a fastener through the core compresses it, breaks the vapour barrier and creates a cold bridge, so the correct method is a rail spanning to the structure with sealed penetrations at known points. Precast concrete is generous by comparison and takes a mechanical anchor almost anywhere, provided the reinforcement is located first. In the town centre the constraint is different again: a protected face may not be drilled at all, and then the sign leaves the wall entirely for a lit totem at the entrance, a bracket fixed into mortar joints, or lettering on the glazing. Photograph the elevation together with its junctions, the eaves above and the ground below, and send those with the enquiry — on an industrial building the photographs decide the drawing more reliably than any dimension you can supply.

Set the night level deliberately

A schedule, a warmer white, and a record in the handover file

A sign specified for daylight and left at that level is glaring after dark, and in a street where people live above the shops that is how the first complaint arrives. Every sign we supply carries a dimming schedule: a daytime level, an evening level, a reduced night level and an optional off time, set at commissioning and written into the handover documentation so it survives a change of manager and is not quietly raised six months later. Colour temperature deserves the same deliberate treatment. A cold blue-white looks harsh against render and stone and is the reason a new sign so often looks cheaper than the older ones beside it; a warmer white settles into the same street and photographs better. Near Trg svobode and the castle there are conservation considerations as well as ordinary municipal signage provisions, and those decisions rest with the competent authorities. Arrange the maintenance while the sign is still being made

Decide the support arrangements before installation rather than after the first failure. Spare power supplies, and spare modules where the sign uses them, are delivered with the sign and stay in your building, so the failures that actually occur can be dealt with by a local electrician working from our written instructions and photographs. Diagnosis begins with an image: a picture of the sign lit after dark almost always identifies the failed section without anyone travelling anywhere. When an attendance is genuinely required, 307 kilometres is a single working day out and back rather than an overnight expedition, which keeps a service visit proportionate to the fault. It is planned rather than treated as an emergency, and travel and subsistence appear as separate lines from the labour so you can see what the journey costs. Warranty is one or two years by specification. The one piece of routine maintenance worth committing to is an inspection of the seals and cable entries each autumn, before the weather turns — that single check prevents most of what otherwise goes wrong.
