Take these steps in order and the board will be used rather than ignored: inventory the messages before choosing anything, hang it where a forklift and a wash-down hose cannot reach it, feed it automatically from the systems that already hold the numbers, put it where people are standing still, agree who is allowed to publish and who checks, and organise support around a 307-kilometre distance that rarely needs a vehicle at all.

In a town built around shift work, the most valuable display is often the one carrying a single line of changing text. A gatehouse on Partizanska ulica, at the Impol works, tells an arriving driver which bay to go to. A production bay shows output against target and the count of days without an incident. A canteen shows the day's menu and the notices that nobody reads on a corkboard. The Josip Vošnjak library on Trg svobode shows its opening hours and this week's events. A school shows examination dates. A health centre shows the duty rota. None of this needs video, colour or resolution; all of it needs to be current, legible from where people stand, and changeable in under a minute by somebody who is not technical. That is the entire brief for a programmable text board, and it is why they outlive flashier installations.
Inventory the messages before choosing anything
What changes, how often, and who learns of it first
Write down every item you would put on the board, how frequently it changes, and which person in the building hears about the change first. That list settles the specification faster than any brochure. Where every entry turns out to be words and numbers — bay allocations, rotas, targets, closures, hours — a plain amber or red board is the right purchase, and putting the saved money into greater length and taller characters buys more than colour ever would. Where two states must be distinguished across a hall without reading, a second colour earns its cost; a full-colour surface is justified only by a logo, a photograph or an animation, and rarely by anything else on an industrial site. The list does something more useful as well. It shows you at a glance whether the content will keep arriving. A board fed by five items that change weekly is a live instrument; a board fed by one item that changes twice a year is a very expensive way of writing a sentence on a wall. If the inventory comes out thin, that is a finding worth acting on before an order is placed, not after.
Hang it out of the reach of the plant
Forklift clearance, vibration, dust and the wash-down hose
In an office a board goes where it looks tidy. In a production environment it goes where it will survive, and that is a different calculation. Leave generous clearance above any route a forklift or a pallet truck uses, including the swing of a raised mast, because the damage in these buildings is nearly always mechanical rather than electrical. Keep the fixing off any panel that transmits machine vibration; a board that trembles is read as broken long before anything actually fails, and the mounting is far easier to get right at installation than to correct afterwards. Then ask two questions about the atmosphere. Is there airborne dust, oil mist or metal particulate, and is the area washed down? Either answer pushes the specification towards a sealed construction even indoors, and both together make it obligatory. Mounting height indoors is usually around two and a quarter metres to the underside, but in a hall with overhead cranes or high racking it may need to go higher, and a board read from a cab is read at a downward angle that costs contrast — which is an argument for a taller character rather than a brighter board.
Feed it from the systems that already hold the numbers
Automatic content does not go stale while somebody is on leave
The most durable content on an industrial display is the content nobody types. Output against target, the current order reference, a count of days without a reportable incident, the next despatch slot, a shift pattern: all of these exist already inside a production or planning system, and where that system can produce an output the board can take it directly. The board then updates itself at the frequency the data changes, and it keeps doing so in August when half the office is away. Raise this at the enquiry stage rather than later. The interface has to be specified alongside the board, and adding a feed to a display bought as a standalone unit is disproportionately awkward work. Manual entry still has its place — a visitor's name at the gate, a notice about a road closure, a safety message after an incident — and the controller takes that over a wireless link, a network cable or a memory stick without touching the automatic content. What you are aiming for is a board where the routine looks after itself and a human only ever adds the exceptional.
Position the board where the waiting happens
Gatehouse, canteen queue, reception, and the bay entrance
The value of a text board is proportional to how long its reader is standing still. A driver waiting at a barrier, a queue at a canteen counter, a visitor at a reception desk, a shift assembling at a bay entrance — these are people with time and nothing to read, and a board in front of them is read out of sheer idleness. The same board on a wall people walk past at speed is read by almost nobody. So choose the position from observed behaviour rather than from the plan. Spend twenty minutes at the candidate location and watch where people actually stop, which way they face while they wait, and what is already competing for their attention. On a site like the one along Partizanska ulica, or at the sidings around Pragersko, the answer is very often the gate rather than the frontage, because the gate is where the waiting is and because the information a driver needs there — bay number, direction, document requirement — is precisely the sort of thing a printed sheet cannot carry.
Agree who may publish, and who checks
Two named people, one review date, and a rule for safety wording
A display that anybody can write to and nobody is responsible for drifts within months. Name two people who may publish, from different departments so that leave and turnover do not silence the board, and record their credentials with the warranty papers rather than in one person's notebook. Then set a review date — the first Monday of each month is enough — at which somebody reads what is actually on the board and deletes whatever has expired. That single habit is the difference between a board still in use in three years and one showing a notice from last spring. Treat safety wording separately. Anything that instructs behaviour — a restriction, an evacuation route, a personal protective equipment requirement — should be approved by whoever owns that responsibility on site before it goes up, and it should not sit in a rotation with catering announcements, because rotation teaches people to look away. Keep instructions static and keep them apart. It costs nothing to decide this at handover and it is very hard to impose once the board has become a free-for-all.
Organise the support before you need it
Labelled spares, a photograph of the settings, and a single day if it comes to that
Do three things on the day the board is commissioned and you will rarely need us afterwards. Photograph the configuration screens, including the network settings, and file the images somewhere that is not a single laptop. Label the spare power supply and controller that arrive with the delivery, and put them somewhere the maintenance team will find them without a search. Keep the paper instructions with them; paper survives the replacement of the computer that held the digital copy. With that in place the ordinary faults never involve travel. A configuration lost after a network change, a programme that has run past its end date, a controller that wants restarting — these account for nearly every call we take on these boards, and each is settled by telephone inside a quarter of an hour. A failed component is shipped and fitted by your own electrician from the rear of the board. Only physical damage and faults we cannot identify remotely bring us out, and at 307 kilometres that is a working day rather than an expedition, planned in advance, with travel and subsistence shown as separate lines from the labour. The warranty runs one or two years by specification.
