The sequence below starts with the number or the message the board exists to carry and where that comes from, then covers whether the text is typed or fed automatically, where the board should physically sit, how bright it should be for a night shift, who holds the access, and how it is proved before anyone is asked to rely on it.

In most towns a scrolling text board faces the street. In Velenje a large share of them face inwards. The valley's employers, from the appliance manufacturing operations of Hisense Europe's Gorenje business through the mine and its contractors to the engineering suppliers around them, run sites where several hundred people arrive on a shift pattern and where the information that matters is numerical and generated by a system: output against target, days since the last reportable incident, the gate a delivery should use, the canteen menu, which line is down. A board showing that kind of content is not a sign in the advertising sense at all. It is a piece of internal infrastructure, and it is specified from the data backwards rather than from the enclosure forwards.

Name the number the board exists to show

Start with the data, not the enclosure

Write down, in one line, what the board will display when nobody has touched it for a week. For a production area that is usually a count: units completed against plan, or the current shift's figure. For a gatehouse it is a list of expected deliveries. For a canteen it is today's menu and the serving window. For a safety board it is a day count that has to increment by itself at midnight and reset by hand when something happens. Each of those has a source, and the source determines everything that follows. A board whose content has no owning system will be updated for a fortnight and then abandoned, which is the same failure mode we see on high streets, just more expensive.

Decide whether the text is typed in or fed automatically

Two very different installations

A typed board holds a message list in its controller; someone edits it over the network, over Wi-Fi or from a USB stick, and the list runs on a schedule with start and end dates. A fed board mirrors something already generated elsewhere, and the practical route for that is an HDMI output from a small computer running your dashboard, sent live to the display. The typed route is simpler, cheaper and entirely adequate for menus, notices and rosters. The fed route is the right answer for anything that changes hourly, because the discipline required to retype a production figure four times a shift does not survive contact with a real factory.

Put the board where the shift actually looks

Doorways, queues and the end of the line

Position is decided by where people already stop. The canteen queue, the turnstile at the gate, the top of the stairs from the changing rooms and the end of a production line are places where somebody has three or four idle seconds. A board mounted high on a wall in a circulation route that everyone walks through at pace is read by nobody. Sightlines in a hall also have to survive the racking and the overhead handling equipment, which move, so we ask on the survey what the space looks like at its busiest rather than what it looks like on a quiet Friday afternoon.

Set the interior brightness low enough for a night shift

700 to 800 nits, then dim further

Interior boards run at 700 to 800 nits and are dimmed automatically from there. In a hall at three in the morning with the general lighting reduced, even that can be too much, and a board that dazzles is one that people learn to avoid looking at. Where a board is mounted outdoors at a gatehouse or on a yard elevation, the specification changes entirely: IP65 housing and 4500 to 5500 nits so that it survives weather and holds an image in direct sun, again with automatic dimming after dark. The two cases are not interchangeable, and fitting an outdoor board indoors because it was available is a mistake we have been asked to undo.

Agree who holds the access and how the board joins the network

A conversation with your IT people, early

An information board on a corporate site is a networked device and your IT department will want to know what it is, what it talks to and where it sits. Bring them into the conversation before the order rather than on the installation day. In practice the board can live on an isolated segment or a guest network, update over Wi-Fi so no new cabling is needed, or be updated entirely offline from a USB stick where policy forbids anything else. All three work. What does not work is discovering on the morning of the fitting that the port we were promised does not exist.

Run it for a week before anyone is allowed to rely on it

A trial period with a named owner

Commission the board, load real content, and then treat the first week as a trial in which the old method continues in parallel. That is when you find out that the shift figure arrives forty minutes late, that the safety counter needs a reset procedure nobody defined, or that the menu is typed by a person who is on leave every second week. Fixing those things during a trial is free; fixing them after the board has become the official source is not. Velenje is 356 kilometres from our Győr workshop, so we build that handover session into the fitting visit, hand over written access details and leave reserve modules on site. The warranty runs one or two years depending on configuration.
