Signage in Velenje meets a constraint most Slovenian towns do not impose. Because the centre was laid out as a single project, the elevations along Šaleška cesta and around Titov trg were drawn with their proportions, their materials and their horizontal lines already decided, and a sign added later is visibly either inside that discipline or outside it. Businesses occupying ground-floor units in the planned centre therefore have less freedom than a shop in an accumulated old town, where centuries of alteration have already broken the rhythm. Find the band, then stay inside it

A sign that breaks above it, or that spreads across a structural pier, will be the loudest thing on the street and not in a way that helps. Choose the technique that suits the surface, not the budget alone
Built-up letters, illuminated box, or a display
Built-up channel letters mounted on standoffs leave the facade visible between the characters and are the lightest-looking option on a designed elevation; halo illumination behind them reads as a glow on the wall rather than as a lit panel. A backlit box with a printed translucent face is more economical and more robust, and it belongs on a commercial shed or a retail unit where the frontage is already a flat plane. A small LED display is a different product and is only justified where the content genuinely changes. Choosing a box because it is cheaper and then mounting it on a carefully proportioned town-centre elevation is the decision most often regretted.
Size the lettering for the speed of approach
Walking, slowing, or passing
A pedestrian in the centre reads a name from six to ten metres and needs capitals of roughly 15 to 25 centimetres. A driver slowing to turn into a commercial site from a valley approach road reads from thirty to fifty metres and needs 40 to 70 centimetres. A name intended to be picked up at speed from a main road at eighty metres needs two metres of letter height and at most two or three words, which for many companies means the sign carries the short trading name and nothing else. Decide which of those three readers you are serving before the typeface is chosen, because you cannot serve all three with one sign.

Illuminated signage is specified with a daytime output and a substantially lower night output on a timer. In the centre, where flats sit above and beside ground-floor units, the night figure is what determines whether the sign remains acceptable to the people living with it. In the industrial belt the argument is different and mostly about running cost and LED life, since a sign held at full output through the small hours ages faster for no audience. We measure and set both levels during commissioning, and we record the times on the handover sheet so a future tenant or facilities manager can find them.

One visit that prevents three
The survey establishes the substrate and how it will be penetrated, the position of the power supplies so they can be reached without dismantling the sign face, the route of the supply cable, and whether the switching is to be a timer at the sign or a control from inside the premises. On the planned centre's buildings we also check what the neighbouring units have done, because a coherent line of signage across a shared elevation is worth more to every business on it than each one shouting individually. All of this is written into a survey report that becomes part of the contract.
