An illuminated LED sign is built from the same tiles as a large display, driven by the same controller and sealed against the same weather. What differs is the purpose: it carries a name, a price or an opening time, and it has to be understood at a glance. Retail signage in Maribor sits on two very different frontages. In the historic streets around Glavni trg and down towards the Lent waterfront the buildings are old, their facades are protected in character, and the customer is a pedestrian already standing in front of the door. On the ring roads and at Europark the sign competes with traffic, car-park lighting and the neighbours' illuminated boxes. The same brand may need two different signs here, and the difference is not stylistic - it is a matter of size, pitch and brightness.
What can be written on a module grid?
Tile counts and letter sizes
Because the tile is 320 millimetres across and half that in height, a sign face is always a rectangle assembled from those units. Two rows give a band 32 centimetres high; four rows give 64 centimetres, which is where a two-line layout with a readable name becomes comfortable. We draw the proposed lettering onto the grid at true scale before manufacture, so you can see how many characters fit and how much air is left around them. Adjusting the design at that stage costs nothing.
From how far must the sign be readable?
The distance sets the pitch
A sign above a doorway on Slovenska ulica is read from a few metres by someone on foot, and that calls for P1.5 to P2.5 so the letter edges stay clean. A board facing the car park at a retail unit is read from twenty or thirty metres and works well at P2.5 to P4. A pylon or a sign aimed at through traffic is a P4 to P8 product. Pick the distance first. Everything else in the specification follows from that one number.
How bright should a sign be after dark?
Daytime output, evening settings
Outdoors the sign is an IP65 unit capable of 4500 to 5500 nits, and it needs that output only while the sun is on it. After dusk the controller steps the brightness down on a schedule, which keeps the sign readable without glaring into the flats above and reduces the running cost. We set the initial evening level during handover and adjust it once you have seen it from the street at night. It is a software setting, not a hardware change.
How is the sign's content changed?
Schedules, network and Wi-Fi
The sign holds a list of items with times attached, so a lunch offer can appear at eleven and disappear at three without anyone touching it. Updates go in over the local network, over Wi-Fi from a laptop or phone on the premises, or on a USB stick if there is no network at all. A live HDMI input is available for the rare case where the sign has to repeat a source inside the shop, but a scheduled list is what nearly every retailer ends up using.
What happens during the survey visit?
One trip, everything recorded
The surveyor measures the fascia, checks what the wall is made of and whether it will hold the fixings, locates the nearest supply point, notes the cable route and photographs the approach for the fitting crew. At 283 kilometres this is a single day out and back, so it happens early rather than being saved up. The findings go into the offer. If the survey turns up something that changes the scope - a substrate needing reinforcement, a supply that has to be extended - you see it before you commit.

Placing a sign on a building in Slovenia is regulated, and the rules bite hardest in protected parts of the old town. The application is made by the owner or the tenant, and we make no claims about how it will be decided. Our part is the technical documentation attached to it: the elevation at scale, the mass, the fixing method, the electrical load and the luminance figures, together with the warranty terms - one or two years - and the list of reserve tiles included in the delivery.
