Piran is a walled Venetian town of fewer than four thousand residents on a narrow peninsula, and its entire historic core is a protected setting. Around Tartini Square, along the harbour front and in the lanes climbing to the town walls and the church of St George, a large permanent image surface fixed to a building is in most cases simply not a realistic proposition, and we would rather say that at the first telephone call than after a survey has been paid for. The commercial demand that exists here is real, but it sits mainly on the Portorož side of the municipality, where the hotel strip, the marina and the conference venues operate under entirely different constraints.
Accept first what the protected core will not carry
An honest starting position rather than a sales one
Inside the walls, the elevations are historic, the lanes are narrow enough that a large surface could not be viewed from a useful distance anyway, and what may be attached to a facade is tightly controlled. A screen of the kind that works on a modern commercial building would be out of scale with a three-window Venetian frontage even if it were permitted. Add to that the practical point that a viewer standing four metres away in a calle cannot see a large image at all, only a section of one. This does not mean there is no place for LED technology in the old town. It means the answer is small, internal or free-standing rather than large and fixed: a modest surface behind a shop window, a display inside a hotel reception or a museum room, or a wheeled unit that touches nothing. Deciding this at the outset saves a great deal of wasted design work.
Move the real question to the Portorož side of the municipality
Where the audience, the buildings and the rules all change
A few hundred metres round the bay, the situation is completely different. The Portorož hotel strip, the Bernardin resort complex between the two, Marina Portorož and the conference facilities at the Auditorium are modern buildings with modern elevations, forecourts with genuine viewing distances, and a seasonal audience numbering in the tens of thousands. That is where a permanent surface can be sized properly, positioned where people actually stop, and justified commercially. If your business trades in Piran but your customers arrive along the coastal road, this distinction matters more than it first appears. A display at the approach, at a car park or at a hotel entrance in Portorož reaches people while they still have a decision to make. A display inside the walls reaches people who have already arrived. Work out which of those you are paying for before choosing a location.
Take the finished dimensions from the tile before anyone draws an opening
Landscape units of 32 by 16 centimetres, and nothing between
Our panels are always laid horizontally: 32 centimetres wide, 16 high. A completed surface is therefore an exact multiple of 32 across and of 16 vertically. A picture 1.92 metres wide by 1.12 high exists; one of 1.85 by 1.10 does not. Where the surface goes into a formed recess, the grid has to lead the drawing rather than follow it, because altering a finished opening is far more expensive than choosing a permitted size at the start. The practical method is to send us the intended area with its tolerance and let us return two or three grid sizes that fit within it, each with its module count and power figure. In joinery or plasterboard the difference is taken up in the surround. In stone or concrete it is not, and that is a decision worth making before anything is cut.
Set the pitch from where people stand, then specify against salt
Two decisions that interact more than they appear to
Pitch follows viewing distance. In a hotel reception or a shop interior where people are two or three metres away, P1.5 to P2.5 is right. In a lobby or a conference room read from the middle of the space, P2.5 to P4. Outdoors on a forecourt or across a car park at twenty-five metres and beyond, P4 to P8, and a finer pitch there is money spent on detail nobody can resolve. Exposure is the second half of the same decision. Anything outdoors on this coast is specified at IP65 with sealed glands and a drained lower edge, running at 4,500 to 5,500 nits so that it holds up against sea glare, and dimmed heavily after dark. What actually fails first here is not the pixels but the metalwork: salt aerosol reaches surfaces well back from the water, and stainless fixings, isolated dissimilar metals and a rinse-down interval belong in the specification from the beginning. The bora adds a wind case that any bracket on an exposed elevation has to be calculated for.
Use a rolling LED poster wherever nothing may be fixed to the fabric
A 201 centimetre frame on castors, and not a single hole drilled
For most premises inside the walls this is the whole answer. The LED poster is an upright digital placard carried on a castored foot, 201 centimetres tall overall, wheeled to wherever it is wanted and connected to a normal wall socket. Not one hole is drilled. No bracket, no access equipment and no structural assessment enter into it, and on the day it is taken away the building is left precisely as it was found. A shop on Tartini Square, a restaurant on the harbour front, a hotel reception or the entrance hall of a museum gains a changeable image without a single element of protected fabric being altered. Speed is the second argument, and across 530 road kilometres it is a strong one. Anything fitted requires a measuring visit, a preparatory day, a night's accommodation and a reserved fitting date. A poster is despatched on a pallet and is showing content within days, put into service by your own staff. Nor is a single unit a dead end: the electronics are built to run in sequence, so two or three standing together behave as one uninterrupted image instead of each repeating the same loop, which lets a buyer begin modestly and enlarge the surface in a later budget year.

What the distance genuinely costs, itemised
Piran is 530 road kilometres from our works, which is the longest run on our Slovenian list. For anything fitted, that is a travelling day, an overnight stay and then a working day, because arriving after seven hours of driving and starting to drill is how errors are made. A survey is combined wherever possible with another coastal visit in the same week, and where you can supply photographs, measurements and a picture of the distribution board, we can often price without travelling at all. On the quotation the vehicle run, the crew hours and the subsistence appear as their own rows, never folded into the price of the surface, so you can see what the distance costs and compare it with a local offer honestly. Warranty runs to one or two years depending on configuration, and spare modules are shipped in the crate with the equipment. That last point matters most at this distance: a module exchange should be a short job for an electrician in Piran, not a reason for a vehicle to leave Győr.
