What follows is a technical description of permanently installed LED walls for Koper and the Slovenian coast, organised by subject: the corrosion question first, then sightlines, module arithmetic, pitch, the supporting structure under bora conditions, and finally what a 515-kilometre road distance from our workshop in Győr means for survey, fitting and later service.

Koper is the only Slovenian city where a display has to survive the sea. The container terminal of Luka Koper works around the clock a few hundred metres from a Venetian core, and the air over both of them carries salt aerosol that finds every unsealed joint and every untreated fastener. Add the bora, which arrives from the north-east in gusts rather than in a steady push, and the exterior specification for a wall on Pristaniška ulica or on a yard elevation near the port is genuinely different from the same wall in an inland town. Inland from the quays the character changes again: around Titov trg the Praetorian Palace, the Loggia and the cathedral bell tower define a protected ensemble of stone frontages where large lit surfaces are the exception, and where the University of Primorska and the surrounding institutions are more likely to specify an interior screen than a facade one.

What a coastal position actually demands

Exterior modules are built to IP65, which addresses water and dust but says nothing on its own about a corrosive atmosphere. For coastal installations the details that matter are the ones outside the module rating: stainless fixings throughout, treated or coated steelwork for the frame, cable glands specified for the environment rather than for a dry inland yard, and a mounting position that keeps the assembly out of direct spray and away from the prevailing salt-laden wind where the building allows it. We also recommend a cleaning interval for coastal sites, because a salt film on the module face reduces contrast measurably long before anything fails, and rinsing with fresh water twice a year is the cheapest maintenance any display owner will ever do.

Two viewing situations in one city

In the streets around Carpacciov trg and the approaches to Titov trg the reader is a pedestrian at three to eight metres, often stationary, frequently a visitor rather than a resident. That is a short-distance, high-detail situation and a small screen serves it. On the open ground towards the port, on a commercial elevation seen across a yard or a car park, or on a frontage read from a passing carriageway, the distance jumps to twenty-five metres and beyond and everything changes: the picture must be larger, the pitch coarser and the brightness higher. We ask for both the nearest and the furthest realistic viewing position at the enquiry stage, because a specification that tries to satisfy both usually satisfies neither.

Module arithmetic and the shapes it permits

Multiples of 32 and 16 centimetres

The building block does not change: a landscape module 32 centimetres wide and 16 centimetres high, never rotated. Widths are therefore multiples of 32 centimetres and heights multiples of 16. A wall drawn on the elevation as six and a half metres by three and a half becomes twenty modules by twenty-two, which is 6.40 by 3.52 metres, and that adjustment either comes out of the frame or out of the reveal. On a stone or historic frontage that difference is not a detail, because the trim has to be designed rather than improvised, and we would rather resolve it on the drawing than on scaffolding.

One chassis, four fittings, two brightness classes

The poster form of the display faces an identical decision from a shorter menu. A single frame accepts four fittings: P1.5 and P2 in the GOB construction, whose sealed face is what we recommend wherever visitors stand close enough to touch the surface; P2.5 as a plain indoor fitting for a little more distance; and P2.5 again inside a closed cabinet for exposed ground. The first three work between 700 and 800 nits, which is correct in a shipping office, a lobby at Pristan or an arrivals hall at the passenger terminal. The cabinet fitting reaches 4,500 to 5,000 and holds an image in the open. For this coast our honest advice is to keep even the cabinet build under cover. A unit that spends its working day indoors and comes out onto the quay only for the hours a ship is alongside meets a few dozen hours of salt aerosol in a year rather than a few thousand, and no coating on the market buys as much service life as that habit does.

Designing for gusts rather than averages

The wind figure that matters on this coast is the gust, not the mean. A flat panel is a sail, and the structure behind an exterior wall in Koper is designed for the local exposure with the fixings taken into sound structural material rather than into render or cladding. Where the wall is mounted on an existing building we supply the loads, the anchor positions and the wind assumptions so that your structural engineer can verify the substrate; where it is free-standing, the foundation or ballast is designed on the same basis. This is the part of a coastal installation where economising is most visible later, and we quote it explicitly rather than folding it into a square-metre rate.

Survey, fitting and service across 515 kilometres

The longest run we quote in Slovenia

Koper lies 515 road kilometres from our works in Győr, the longest of our Slovenian journeys, and the plan reflects it. A survey visit comes first, with a preparation day and an overnight stay, and returns with measurements, substrate findings, the power and signal routes and the access equipment required. The fitting is then a separate, scheduled visit rather than an attempt to do everything in one push. Travel and the crew's daily allowance are itemised as their own lines on every quotation for a foreign site and are never absorbed into the price of the wall, so the cost of the distance is visible. Reserve modules ship with the display, and the warranty runs for one or two years depending on the configuration and the exposure.
