Osijek is built low and wide. Europska avenija runs for well over a kilometre with rows of trees and set-back villas on either side, the tram line follows the same axis, and past the ring road the Slavonian plain simply carries on. For a large display that geometry is generous and demanding at once. There are few tall neighbours to interrupt a sightline, so a screen can be read from a long way off, yet the same openness means the closest and the most distant viewer may stand two hundred metres apart. A panel on the approach to the Opus Arena, a facade screen near Trg Ante Starčevića and an interior wall on the Portanova concourse are three separate engineering problems, and what separates them is metres of viewing distance rather than square metres of picture.

Not every display has to be built into a wall. The LED poster stands on its own wheeled foot, arrives complete and is put into service by the buyer, which takes scaffolding, facade fixings and a crew booking out of the project in one step. Osijek is 385 kilometres away, one driving day, so a fitted screen is perfectly realistic here and the poster is normally chosen for other reasons: it can be pushed from a unit in Avenue Mall Osijek to the Hotel Osijek lobby and back as the campaign moves. Behind glass on Županijska ulica in July, specify the outdoor cabinet version, which works between 4,500 and 5,000 nit.

From a Portanova shop window to the stadium approach
Pixel pitch is the spacing between neighbouring diodes, and it is chosen from the shortest distance at which somebody will genuinely study the screen, not from the size of the wall. Where people stand within a couple of metres, as in a retail interior, a foyer at the University of Osijek or behind a reception desk, a 1.5 to 2.5 millimetre pitch keeps lettering and small logos clean. For a mid-range position read from roughly five to fifteen metres, the 2.5 to 4 millimetre band is the ordinary answer. Outdoors on an avenue the numbers travel in the opposite direction. A facade screen read from the far pavement of Europska avenija, or a wall on the stadium approach where even the nearest traffic lane is twenty metres away, performs perfectly at 4 to 8 millimetres, and the coarser spacing buys brightness, mechanical robustness and a lower cost per square metre. Ordering a fine pitch for a distant audience is the most frequent and most expensive specification error we are asked to correct.

Frost, river fog and August heat inside one enclosure
Osijek has no salt air, which removes the corrosion problem that dominates every coastal installation. What it supplies instead is a real winter and a river valley that holds moisture for days. Outdoor cabinets are sealed to IP65 front and back, keeping driving rain and blown snow away from the electronics; the more interesting question is condensation, because a screen left off for a fortnight in December and then powered up cold will sweat internally unless the housing breathes through its designed vents. Brightness follows the same reasoning. An outdoor wall here is specified at 4,500 to 5,500 nit so that it survives direct summer sun, but that number is a ceiling and not a working setting. On a foggy morning by the embankment, or at eleven at night, the same screen should be running at a small fraction of it, partly because a glaring surface in fog is harder to read rather than easier, and partly because the flats and the carriageway below deserve consideration. The dimming curve is set during commissioning and stays adjustable afterwards.

Lower output, finer pitch, a quieter fitting
Indoor walls are a different product built from the same tiles. Operating brightness sits at 700 to 800 nit, which is comfortable in a lit room and would look washed out on a facade; anything higher is simply uncomfortable to sit in front of for an hour. Because the audience is close the pitch is fine, and because the pitch is fine the number of tiles per square metre is high, so an indoor wall is frequently the dearer of two screens with identical dimensions. The binding constraints indoors are rarely optical. They are the load capacity of a plasterboard partition, the depth available in front of a structural wall, the position of a ventilation grille, and whether the room can be closed for two days. In a working faculty building or a shopping centre we normally fit outside opening hours and hand over a screen that has already run for several hours before the first visitor sees it.
Getting a picture onto the wall
A live cable on site, or a schedule sent from elsewhere
There are two independent ways to feed a display and most installations end up using both. The first is a live HDMI input from a media player, a notebook or a camera mixer standing close to the screen, which is what a match, a presentation or a live score needs. The second is a stored playlist held in the controller, which runs by itself to a timetable and is refreshed over the network, from a USB stick, or over Wi-Fi. The wireless route matters more than it sounds. No data cable has to be pulled from an office to the display position, which on an older Osijek facade can be the difference between a two-day job and a two-week one. A manager changes a price panel from a telephone in another building, and a company with several branches sends one schedule to all of them at once. Power still has to reach the screen, naturally; it is only the signal that is free of cabling.

That is comfortably within a single day: a survey can be completed and the crew can be home the same evening, and a fault call does not require an overnight stay unless the repair itself runs long. We state the figure plainly because response time is a fair question and a vague answer to it is worth nothing. Every consignment includes reserve modules from the same production batch as the wall, so a failed tile is exchanged instead of ordered, and the warranty runs one or two years according to the configuration agreed. Since the site is outside Hungary, the journey and the crew's subsistence appear as their own lines in the offer rather than being folded into a square-metre rate, so you can see precisely what the distance costs and that figure does not grow with the screen. Where a facade screen faces a public street, local rules on signage and light apply; we prepare the technical annexes, fixing details and photometric data, and the application is decided by the competent authority rather than by us.
