A programmable text display is a strip of LED tiles driven by a controller that stores a list of messages and plays them in order. This page is written around the part that most sales material ignores, namely what happens after the sign is on the wall: who writes the messages, how often, what a neglected board looks like, and what the whole thing costs to keep running for a decade. There is one thing Osijek has that almost no other Croatian city does, and it changes how a small text display behaves: trams. People wait at a stop along Europska avenija for two or three minutes with nothing to do and their eyes level with the shopfronts opposite. Add to that the unusually generous pavements around Trg Ante Starčevića, the queue at a pharmacy counter, the line at a bakery before eight in the morning, and the students crossing between faculty buildings of the University of Osijek, and you have a city with a large number of short, stationary, bored moments. A moving line of text is the only display format that is designed for exactly those moments. It is not a small video wall and it does not compete with one; it is a sentence that changes.
A week in the life of a text board
Somebody has to own the sentence
The single best predictor of whether a text display earns its price is whether one named person is responsible for it. Where that person exists, the board carries duty hours that are actually correct, the price of the thing being pushed this week, a note that the counter closes early on Friday, and a greeting on a local holiday. Where nobody owns it, the same board shows a welcome message from the year it was installed, and every passer-by learns to ignore it within a fortnight. The realistic workload is ten minutes a week. A pharmacy changes its duty notice; a bakery changes one item; a service counter updates a waiting time. We suggest agreeing, before the order is placed, who that person is and who covers for them on holiday. It is a management decision disguised as a technical purchase, and it is the reason two identical boards on the same street can perform completely differently.
Letter height, and the wall of text nobody reads
Fewer words, larger characters
A useful rule of thumb is that a character needs roughly one centimetre of height for every four metres of reading distance, so a passer-by ten metres away wants letters around two and a half centimetres tall, and a driver reading across a junction at forty metres needs them four times that. Because the tiles are a fixed 32 by 16 centimetres, the strip's height comes in 16 centimetre steps and the character height is chosen from what fits inside it, one line or two. The more common failure is not too small a letter but too much text. A line that takes eleven seconds to scroll past will be read by nobody who is walking, because the reader leaves before the sentence ends. Six to eight words per message, three or four messages in rotation, and a repeat interval short enough that a person waiting for a tram sees the whole cycle twice: that is a board that works. Everything longer belongs on the door.
Behind the glass or out on a bracket
Two positions with different consequences
An indoor unit standing inside the shop window is the cheaper and simpler installation. It needs no weatherproof housing, it runs at a modest brightness, it plugs into an ordinary socket, and it can be moved. Its weaknesses are optical: reflections in the glass at certain hours, a viewing angle limited by the window reveal, and reduced legibility if the glazing is tinted or coated. A facade unit on a bracket faces none of that but has to be built for the street. It is sealed to IP65, it carries its own supply and cable entry, and it is anchored into sound masonry rather than into render. The bracket position deserves more thought than it usually gets: mounted too high, the board is above the natural sightline of somebody walking beneath it, and the sign is read only from the far pavement. On a narrow street a lower, projecting position beats a higher, flatter one almost every time.
Fog over the Drava and the case for dimming
Brighter is not more legible
The Osijek winter produces days when the river valley holds fog until the middle of the afternoon, and this is where an automatically dimmed board separates itself from a fixed-brightness one. In fog, a very bright display scatters light into the air immediately in front of it and the characters lose their edges; turned down, the same board is sharper. The controller therefore runs a schedule, with a daytime level, a lower evening level and a further reduction overnight. The same schedule protects the neighbours. A text strip is a small device, but it is often mounted at first-floor level within a few metres of somebody's bedroom window, and an unattended board running at full output all night is the most common complaint we hear about in any city. Setting a sensible curve at commissioning costs nothing and prevents the conversation entirely.
Who changes the message, and from where
Access, not cabling, is the real question
Getting text into the controller is technically easy and there are three routes. A USB stick carries a message list to a board that has no network at all. A wired network connection suits a unit inside a building with existing cabling. Wi-Fi is the option that matters most in older Osijek buildings, because it removes any need to pull a data cable from the office to the sign; only the power supply has to reach the position. The question worth deciding early is not which route but who holds the access. Give the credentials to two people rather than one, because a board that can only be changed by an employee on annual leave is a board that shows last month's opening hours. A business with several premises can push an identical list to all of them from one place, and can equally leave one line local, which is how a chain keeps a common message while each branch shows its own telephone number.
What it costs to keep running
Power, lifespan, spares and a 385 kilometre service call
A shopfront text strip is one of the least expensive devices a business can own to operate. Consumption for a typical single-line board is measured in tens of watts, not hundreds, and with an evening dimming schedule the annual electricity bill for it is trivial next to the shop's lighting. The diodes themselves have a working life measured in tens of thousands of hours, which for a board running twelve hours a day is many years before any visible loss of output. The realistic costs are elsewhere. Boards are supplied with one or two years of warranty and with spare tiles from the same batch, and keeping those spares in a drawer converts most faults into a fifteen minute exchange. Osijek is 385 road kilometres from the workshop, so a visit that does need our technician is a single day out and back, with the travel and subsistence shown as separate lines in the offer rather than hidden inside the price of the sign.
