Most advice about scrolling text boards assumes you are buying one. In Karlovac the enquiries we get are frequently for several at once, and that changes the whole exercise. A brewery site has more than one gate and a visitor entrance. Aquatika has a ticket hall and a car park. The Mladost hall, the Čavlović-Čavlek stadium, the Turanj museum and the university campus each have two or three positions where a line of text would do something useful. Once you are past a single board, the questions stop being about character height and become questions of estate management: how many, of what type, on whose network, edited by whom, and what happens when one of them fails 365 kilometres from the people who built it.

Count every position that needs a board before you order the first one

The second board is much cheaper than the first, and much cheaper still if it was foreseen

Walk the site with a notebook and write down every place where a line of changing text would actually change somebody's behaviour: the vehicle gate where drivers need a bay number, the visitor entrance where opening times change seasonally, the queue at a ticket hall, the corridor where a shift message goes unread on paper. You will usually find between three and eight. Ordering them as one project rather than one at a time gets you consistent hardware, a single set of spares and one training session instead of several - and it stops you buying a board in March whose controller cannot talk to the one you buy in November.

Standardise on one tile type and one controller across all of them

Different sizes are fine; different families are not

The boards themselves can and should differ in size. A gate strip four tiles wide and two rows deep and a foyer board twelve tiles wide are the same product in different quantities, because the building block is fixed at 320 by 160 millimetres in every case. What must not differ is the family: one controller type, one piece of software, one pitch class wherever the viewing distances allow it. That single decision means any spare module fits any board on the site, one person can be trained once, and a fault at the stadium can be diagnosed using the identical unit at the museum as a reference.

Decide how each board joins its network, building by building

Wi-Fi, cable or a stick, chosen per position rather than as a policy

Do not decide this centrally. A board in a modern foyer with good coverage takes its schedule over Wi-Fi and needs no cabling at all. A unit on a gatehouse at the far end of a yard may have no usable signal and is better served by a UTP run to the nearest switch. An isolated position - a museum outbuilding, a car park kiosk - may be simplest with a USB stick and a monthly update. All three methods are supported. Measure the signal at each position during the survey and record which method each board uses, because the person maintaining them in three years will otherwise have to rediscover it.

Name an owner for every board, and a deputy for each owner

Estates fail person by person, not module by module

The commonest reason a text board shows the wrong thing is not technical. It is that the one person who knew how to change it has moved on, or is on holiday, or was never told the board was their responsibility. For an estate this compounds: four boards with one nominated user between them will drift out of date within a year. We ask for two named people per board, with at least one of them present at handover, and we have the nominated person make a live edit in front of us before we leave. That five-minute test is the only meaningful proof of training.

Change one message across the estate as a test before you depend on it

A dry run with nothing at stake

Before the boards carry anything anyone relies on, push a single harmless message to all of them and watch what happens. You will learn how long a full update takes, which unit did not receive it and why, whether the Croatian diacritics render identically on every board, and whether the person you trained can actually do it unsupervised. Do this in a quiet week. Discovering that the gatehouse unit silently kept last week's schedule is a minor annoyance during a test and a genuine problem on the morning of a delivery or an event.

Hold shared spares so that 365 kilometres almost never matters

One drawer, one batch, one local electrician

The advantage of a standardised estate is that a small box of spare modules from the same production batch covers every board you own. Keep them in one place, dry and labelled, along with the written record of settings, network methods and credentials. A local electrician can then change a module under our guidance without anyone travelling. Where a visit from Győr is genuinely needed, Karlovac at 365 kilometres is a long single day, and we plan it to cover every board on the site in that one visit rather than returning for each. Warranty runs for one or two years by agreement across the whole delivery.
