These steps set out how we approach a lit sign in Karlovac: photographing the approach down the axis before sketching anything, choosing between a projecting sign and a flush fascia on evidence, raising the question of the protected core early, detailing fixings for damp brick and old render, setting two brightness levels at commissioning, and budgeting for the fifth year rather than only the invoice.

Illuminated signage in Karlovac — manufacturing, installation, quote

Croatia 365 km from our plant in Győr

An illuminated sign inside the Zvijezda is subject to a piece of urban geometry that exists almost nowhere else. The streets of the star fortress run straight from the central square out to the six bastions, which means a frontage is met head-on from a very long way down an axis and then hardly at all from anywhere else. A projecting sign that would be redundant on an ordinary street becomes essential here, and a flush fascia that works perfectly on a boulevard can be invisible. Outside the ramparts and the green promenade that replaced the moat, Karlovac reverts to a normal signage market: the retail and service premises along the through-roads, the Karlovačka pivovara site and the industrial addresses around it, the Dubovac side above the Kupa, and the corridor towards the motorway where the reader is driving rather than walking.

Photograph the approach down the axis before you sketch anything

Stand where the customer first sees the building

Walk to the far end of the street your premises face, and photograph the building from there, at eye level, by day and again after dark. On a radial running out of Trg bana Josipa Jelačića that will typically be a hundred and fifty metres or more of straight street, and the photograph will show you immediately whether your frontage is visible at all or whether it is masked by a projecting balcony, a tree in the promenade ring, or the sign of the business next door. This is a twenty-minute exercise that reorders every subsequent decision, and it is the first thing we ask a client to do before we quote.

Choose between a projecting sign and a flush fascia on the evidence

Head-on visibility against oblique visibility

Once you have the photograph the choice usually makes itself. A frontage read head-on down a radial can carry a flush fascia and be seen from the whole length of the street. A frontage on a side street or set at an angle needs a projecting sign at right angles to the wall, because the fascia will only be legible from directly opposite. Both can be illuminated; the projecting sign is more visible and more exposed, and it is the one that attracts more attention from whoever regulates appearance in the protected core. We normally draw both and let you compare them on the photomontage.

Raise the question of the protected core at the beginning, not at the end

Requirements exist; the decision belongs to the authority

Zvijezda is a protected urban entity and there are requirements governing what may be placed on its frontages. We do not predict how an application will be assessed and we regard any supplier who does as a warning. What we prepare is the technical annex: scaled drawings of the sign and of the elevation, materials and finishes, the fixing detail with load figures and the substrate as found, the electrical specification, luminance values by day and by night, and photomontages of the frontage in both conditions. Ask about this at the outset, because the answer determines the format and there is no point drawing something that cannot be considered.

Detail the fixings for damp brick and tired render

Test holes, mortar joints and a record that stays with the building

The buildings inside the ramparts are old and the walls hold moisture in a way a coastal wall never does - river fog, a high water table and a century of patch repairs. Under smooth render you may meet solid brick, rubble fill, the anchors of a sign nobody remembers, or a void. Test holes during the survey settle that; assumption does not. Anchors go into mortar joints where the layout permits, in the smallest number that carries the load with a proper margin, and each one is sleeved and sealed. Stainless is worth the modest extra in this atmosphere. The as-built fixing positions are handed over as a marked-up elevation for whoever occupies the premises next.

Set two brightness levels at commissioning and write the times down

Daytime, evening, and the flats above the shop

Residential floors sit above nearly all the ground-floor trade inside the ramparts, and the promenade ring is somewhere people walk in the evening. A sign left at its daytime figure past midnight will earn a letter, and a sign extinguished in response to one has returned nothing at all. Commissioning therefore fixes a daytime figure, a lower evening figure and either a night figure or a timed shutdown, all four numbers and their hours entered in the handover document. Settle this at commissioning rather than under pressure afterwards: a level you selected yourself can be defended, and one imposed on you generally cannot.

Budget the fifth year, not only the invoice

Cleaning, the supply that fails first, and 365 kilometres

Electricity is not where the money goes; a shopfront-sized lit sign consumes less than the lamps behind the window. The recurring outlays are washing and the driver. In a valley that manufactures fog and road film, once a year is the right interval, and doing it while the window cleaner is already there costs almost nothing extra. The driver, or power supply, is statistically the first thing to give up, so we mount it somewhere a technician can open without taking the sign face apart, and hand over a matching unit for the shelf. Cover runs one or two years as agreed. At 365 kilometres a real failure is a long single day out of Győr, with mileage and the crew allowance quoted before departure.
