An illuminated sign is a small engineering problem with a large aesthetic consequence. The order below is the order in which the constraints actually bite: what the elevation will physically accept, which construction suits it, what the sign should do after dark, the point at which a lit sign stops being the right product, and what the paperwork and a 339 kilometre supply chain do to the schedule.

Illuminated signage in Zaprešić — manufacturing, installation, quote

Seen from a signage brief, Zaprešić is three towns at once. There is the retail frontage along Marshal Tito Street and Pavao Lončar Street, where signs are read by pedestrians at four or five metres. There is the industrial edge, with addresses such as the Messer Croatia Gas plant and the Roca ceramics works, where a sign is read from a road at fifty kilometres an hour and mostly has to say who occupies the gate. And there is the protected historic layer around Novi Dvori and the chateaux at Lužnica, Januševac and Laduč, where restraint is not a style preference but a condition of the address.

Frontage types and what each will carry

Render, curtain wall, historic masonry and a free-standing post

The facade decides more than the design does. A rendered wall over blockwork takes a letter set on stand-offs without difficulty. A modern curtain-walled unit on the industrial estate usually cannot be drilled between the mullions, so the sign is carried on the frame itself or on a totem in front of the building. Historic masonry is a different case again: fixings are limited, reversibility matters, and the sensible answer is often a sign that touches the building as little as possible. Establishing which of these you have, before a designer draws anything, saves a redesign later.

Built-up letters against an illuminated box

Two constructions, two maintenance stories

Individual illuminated letters, lit from within and standing clear of the wall, read as part of the architecture and let the facade show between the characters. They cost more per square metre of apparent size and each character is its own small assembly. A lit box with a translucent face is cheaper, gives an even glow, and is the honest choice where a large amount of text or a complex mark has to be shown, but it does put a rectangle on the building. Neither is better in general. The frontage, the length of the name and the distance it is read from settle it.

Night brightness and the neighbours

Enough to be seen, not enough to be complained about

Brightness has to move through the day, because a level that is comfortable in full sun is punishing at eleven at night. We programme three of them: one for daylight, one for the evening, one for the small hours. Where the address faces housing, as most of the central frontage does, that third figure is set low on purpose. Colour catches people out as well. A saturated red or blue looks far brighter to the eye than the same measured output rendered in white, so a strongly coloured sign wants a lower setting than a white one. The useful test is not a meter but a walk to the nearest bedroom window opposite, after dark, to look back at what you have made.

The point at which a sign becomes a screen

Fixed lettering, changeable content, and the module grid underneath

If the wording will never change, a lit sign is the right product and a screen is an expensive way to say the same thing twice. If prices, opening hours, offers or languages move, an LED surface repays itself in reprints and in the labour of putting them up. Cross that line and our module geometry begins to bind: the picture is assembled from landscape tiles a third of a metre wide and half that tall, so both dimensions advance in whole tiles and nothing between two steps can be made. A fascia panel of 2.56 m by 0.96 m is eight tiles by six, which fits a standard shop frontage neatly.

Consents, drawings and the division of work

What we provide and what your side submits

Facade signage is regulated, and more tightly in the protected surroundings of the historic estates than on an industrial plot. We do not act as your agent in that process and we promise nothing about its outcome. Our contribution is the technical file it calls for: dimensioned drawings, the fixing detail with its loads, the finished weight, the electrical demand, the declared brightness and the operating schedule. The application itself is lodged by your architect or a local representative. Opening that conversation while the sign is still a drawing, rather than once it has been made, is the single change that most reliably keeps a signage project on its date.

Distance, service intervals and the guarantee

339 kilometres, and how it affects a maintenance call

We are 339 kilometres away by road: an easy day out and back for a survey, but not a journey worth repeating for a failed driver. So the sign is built to be serviced by somebody local. Gear trays are reachable, the components are ordinary rather than proprietary, and a spares pack is delivered with the sign so that the electrician you already use can finish most interventions the same day. Fitting, mileage and subsistence appear as their own rows on the offer instead of being absorbed into the price of the sign. The guarantee is twelve or twenty-four months by specification, and it covers what we manufactured, not damage or a fault arising on your own supply.
