The commercial face of Samobor is small-format and close-up. Around Trg kralja Tomislava the frontages are narrow, the upper storeys are residential, and a passer-by reads a sign from across a pavement rather than across six lanes of traffic. Further out, towards Bregana and the business plots shared with neighbouring Sveta Nedelja, the scale changes completely: there a sign is read at speed from a road. Which construction suits a narrow frontage on a historic square?

Individual letters, a backlit panel, or a lit fascia

Individual illuminated letters mounted directly to the wall are usually the quietest solution and the one that suits an old frontage best, because the building stays visible between and behind the characters. A backlit panel is a single tray with the graphics cut out and lit from within: cheaper, more uniform, and considerably more dominant on the elevation. A lit fascia sits somewhere between the two and works well above a shopfront that already has a horizontal band to occupy. On a narrow unit the choice is often settled by depth rather than taste. Letters need a return of several centimetres and a route for the supply behind them; where the wall cannot be penetrated, a shallow tray fixed to an existing rail may be the only build that is genuinely available.

How bright should a sign be once the street lights come on?

Enough to be read, not enough to annoy the flat above

The reference point that matters is not a figure on a datasheet but the illuminated environment the sign sits in. A frontage on a lit central street competes with far less than one on an unlit approach road, and a sign set for the darker case will look aggressive in the brighter one. We set output on site after dark and record the setting, so that a later repair does not silently return the sign to full power. Where there are flats directly above or opposite, dimming after a chosen hour is the difference between a sign that is tolerated and one that generates complaints. It costs nothing to specify at the order stage and is awkward to retrofit once the wiring is closed up.

What has to be prepared before anything is fitted?

Rules exist, and we provide the technical material

Signage on a facade is subject to local requirements, and those requirements differ between a frontage in the historic core and a unit on a business plot at the edge of town. We do not advise on what will or will not be permitted, and we make no undertaking about any decision, because that is not ours to give. What we do supply is the technical documentation that any submission or landlord consent will ask for: dimensioned drawings of the sign, the fixing detail, the weight, the electrical load and the luminance data. Owners normally work with a local designer or agent for the process itself, and we deal directly with that person so nothing is translated twice.

How is the sign built to survive the local climate?

Materials, sealing and the joints that fail first

The failures we are called out to are almost never the LEDs. They are water finding a way into a tray through a cable entry that was never properly glanded, corrosion where a steel fixing meets an aluminium return, and condensation inside a sealed letter that was assembled on a humid day. The Gradna valley holds damp for much of the year, and the winters here are wet rather than dry and cold. So the specification we work to concentrates on the boring parts: marine-grade fixings, glanded entries, drainage at the lowest point of any tray, and powder-coated aluminium rather than mild steel anywhere water can stand. It adds a little to the price of a sign and removes most of the reasons anybody would ever have to visit it.

How is the sign switched, and who decides when?

Timers, photocells and the setting nobody wrote down

Most illuminated signs are switched by an astronomical timer, which follows sunset through the year without anybody adjusting it, or by a photocell that responds to actual light levels. Either is better than a manual switch behind the counter, which invariably ends up either permanently on or forgotten during the one week the shop is shut. We hand over a single sheet recording the switching times, the dimming level, the circuit the sign is on and where the isolator is. It is a small document that saves a service call, because the most common fault we are asked to attend turns out to be a tripped circuit that nobody could find.

What happens when something does go wrong at this distance?

Diagnosis first, parts second, a vehicle only if necessary

The first step is always a conversation and a photograph, because a surprising share of reported failures are supply-side and can be resolved by your own electrician in an afternoon. Where a component has genuinely failed, we ship the part; letters and modules are designed so that a competent local contractor can change one without specialist equipment. A journey from the works is the last resort rather than the first response, and for good reason: 338 kilometres each way is a full day of somebody's time before any work is done. Signs we build are specified on the assumption that we will not be standing in front of them again for several years.
