Illuminated signs for businesses in the city: lit lettering, backlit boxes, entrance portals and freestanding totems. The steps below follow how a sign project is worked through here, from the first survey of the wall to the maintenance visit two years later.

Illuminated signage in Rijeka — manufacturing, installation, quote

Croatia 471 km from our plant in Győr

The Korzo is Rijeka's shop window: a pedestrian street of ordered nineteenth and early twentieth-century elevations where every business wants to be noticed and no building owner wants damage. Signage there is a compromise between visibility and restraint, negotiated one facade at a time. Away from the centre the calculation becomes purely physical, because a sign near the port, at Zamet or on the road climbing to Trsat has to endure salt-laden air and bura gusts, and after five years it will be judged on whether its finish and its seals have held.

Survey the shopfront before drawing anything

What the wall can actually carry

The first visit establishes the substrate, the fixing points, the available power and the sightlines. On the Korzo the elevations are older than they look and rendered surfaces hide varying construction, so test drillings are made and recorded before the design is finalised. We also photograph the neighbouring signs, because a proposal in a coherent street frontage is judged partly by what already exists there, and a design that ignores its neighbours usually comes back for revision.

Ask about the local rules at the start, not at the end

Where the decision sits

Signage on street-facing elevations is regulated, and in the protected parts of the centre the assessment goes further. We cannot guarantee a permit and we do not present ourselves as able to influence one. What we do is produce the file an application needs, meaning a dimensioned elevation, the fixing section, the loads, the materials and the light output, plus, where the position is sensitive, a second and quieter design option prepared in parallel so that a refusal does not restart the project from zero.

Pick a construction that survives sea air and gusts

Materials, seals and wind area

Two forces act on a sign in this city. Chloride-laden humidity attacks metal, so aluminium, stainless fasteners and accessible, replaceable seals are specified instead of the cheapest equivalent. Wind acts on area, so a projecting double-sided box carries a far higher load than flat lettering of the same width, and its bracket and anchors are calculated accordingly. Where a position is very exposed, reducing the projection is often a better answer than strengthening the bracket.

Balance the output against the street at night

Dimming and direction

A sign is set during commissioning, not shipped at maximum. On the Korzo, where the surfaces are pale and the evening ambient level is low, a moderate brightness reads cleanly, whereas a sign on an arterial road or above a car park near Tower Center Rijeka needs considerably more. In every case a time switch or a light sensor with a reduced overnight level is fitted, and light is directed onto the lettering rather than upward or into the flats over the shop.

Fix into sound structure and seal every entry

Anchors, joints and cable routes

Anchors go into solid material, into mortar joints on stone wherever possible, and never through a moulding or a carved detail. On modern buildings with curtain walling nothing is drilled into the glazing system: the sign is carried on a bracket fixed to the frame after the facade contractor's details have been checked. Every cable entry is sleeved, sealed and given a drip loop, because water entering a wall behind a sign is a repair nobody budgets for.

Keep it clean and inspect it once a year

The maintenance the coast requires

Wash the face, look at the seals and glands, check the fixings for corrosion and confirm that the drivers are not running hot. Beside the sea that yearly rhythm is worth keeping, while inland it can be stretched. Because the workshop is 471 kilometres away, service visits are scheduled ahead and combined with other jobs in the area, which keeps the travel share of the invoice down. Warranty is one or two years depending on the construction, and spare parts are stocked for what we build.
