This page is arranged as the sequence we work through with a Vinkovci client for illuminated signage: look at the frontage the way its readers will, size the characters for the speed they are travelling at, choose a construction that survives a Slavonian year, assemble the documentation, set the output and the switching, and agree in advance what a service day looks like from 397 kilometres. We manufacture the sign and supply the technical annexes; what may be displayed on a given building is decided by the local process, and we make no promises about it.

Because Vinkovci grew as a crossroads, a great deal of its commercial traffic is still traffic. The town is a rail junction of national importance and a road one too, so a large share of the people who will ever read a business sign here are moving when they read it: through the approaches, along the routes towards Županja and Vukovar, past dealerships and workshops on the edge of the built-up area. That changes the design problem. On the pedestrian streets around Trg bana Josipa Šokčevića a sign is examined at a few metres; three hundred metres away the same business needs a sign that delivers one word at forty kilometres an hour.

Look at the frontage from the driver's seat first

The viewpoint that decides everything, and the one nobody uses

Before drawing anything, go and look at the building from where its readers really are. If that is a pavement, stand on the pavement. If it is a car approaching at speed, sit in a car and drive past twice. Note at what point the frontage becomes visible, what obstructs it, and how many seconds of view there actually are. The answer is regularly uncomfortable. A sign designed on a screen at full width looks confident; the same sign glimpsed for two seconds between a tree and a parked lorry may deliver nothing at all. Every good signage decision we have made in a town like this started with somebody physically going and looking, and most of the poor ones started with a drawing.

Size the characters for the speed of the reader

Fewer words, larger letters, and the courage to delete

A reasonable working figure for legibility is about one centimetre of character height for every four to five metres of reading distance, and a reader in a vehicle needs the message complete in roughly two seconds. Put those together and a roadside sign has room for a name and possibly one qualifier. Nothing else survives. So the work is subtraction. Take the text your business would like to display, cut it to the single thing a passing driver needs, and put everything else on the frontage sign that people read on foot. Two signs with two different jobs will always outperform one sign attempting both, and the pair usually costs less than a single oversized compromise.

Check what the wall can actually carry

Substrate first, construction second

Before choosing between letters and a tray, find out what is behind the render. An old solid wall, a modern frame with an insulated outer skin and a lightweight infill panel are three different fixing problems, and only the first one takes a plug and a screw with any confidence. Where external insulation is present, the load has to be carried back to the structure behind it, which means longer brackets, sleeves through the insulation and made-good penetrations. This is settled with a drill and a borescope at survey, not by assumption. It is also the point at which a construction sometimes changes: where nothing can be safely carried on the elevation, the answer may be a free-standing sign in front of the building rather than a lighter version of the one you wanted on it.

Collect the consents that come from other people

Landlords, co-owners and the process itself

Signage stalls on people more often than on engineering. If you lease the unit, the lease will say something about alterations to the exterior, and your landlord will want to see a drawing. If the building is in shared ownership, the other owners have an interest in what is fixed to the common structure. Gather those agreements while the sign is still being designed, not after it is manufactured. Alongside that runs the local process, which sets requirements that vary by location within the town. We take no position on it and promise nothing about any decision. Our contribution is the technical material it calls for from the manufacturer, produced in a form your appointed agent can submit without redrawing it.

Aim the light before you argue about brightness

Spill, angle and the window across the street

Most complaints about illuminated signs are not about how bright the sign is but about where its light goes. A well-aimed sign at a moderate level is unobtrusive; a poorly aimed one at the same level throws light into a bedroom opposite and becomes somebody's grievance. So the first adjustment on site is geometry: the tilt of a projecting unit, the depth of the return on a letter, and a shield where a fitting would otherwise spill upwards. Only once the light is going where it should do we set the level, standing at the distance the sign is read from, at night. The commissioning figures are written down and handed over, so that a technician replacing a driver in three years does not quietly return the whole installation to maximum output.

Agree the fault ladder before you need it

Four steps, and a vehicle only at the fourth

Put the escalation in writing at handover. Step one is your own check: is the circuit live, has the isolator been switched, does the timer show the right hour. Step two is a photograph and a description sent to us, which resolves a large proportion of reports without anything being dispatched. Step three is a part in the post, fitted by a local electrician, because the sign is deliberately built so a module or a driver can be exchanged with ordinary tools. Step four is us in a vehicle, and at nearly 400 kilometres each way that is two days consumed before any work begins. Designing to avoid step four is not evasion; it is the only honest answer to the distance, and it is why the spares arrive with the sign rather than sitting on a shelf in Hungary. Cover runs for one or two years according to the construction agreed.
