This page treats an illuminated sign as an engineering item with an aesthetic result, and it works through the decisions as questions. What will the frontage carry? Which construction suits it? How bright should it be after dark? When is a sign the wrong product and a screen the right one? What has to be submitted, and by whom? And what does the distance from our works mean for fitting and for service?

Illuminated signage in Vukovar — manufacturing, installation, quote

Croatia 400 km from our plant in Győr

Signage in Vukovar has to answer to two quite separate settings. Along Gospodska Street and around Trg Republike Hrvatske, much of the historic fabric was rebuilt, and the result is a conservation-controlled townscape in which what may be fixed to a facade is genuinely restricted. Out along the D2 and around the port and the Borovo Naselje works, the setting is industrial and the constraints are practical ones: distance, vehicle speed and the fact that nobody is on foot. The same company name may need two entirely different signs at its two addresses in this town.

What will the facade take?

Restored masonry, modern render and an industrial elevation

On a restored building in the centre, fixings are the whole conversation. Fewer penetrations, reversible details and a sign that can be removed one day without leaving a scar are the terms on which such an address is worked. On ordinary render over blockwork, a set of built-up letters on stand-offs is straightforward and nothing more needs saying. On an industrial elevation of profiled sheet, the sign is usually carried on the structure behind rather than on the cladding itself, and the cable route is planned with the fixings rather than after them. Which of these you have should be settled before a designer draws a single letter.

Letters or a lit panel?

Two constructions with different costs and different lives

Built-up letters lit from within sit clear of the wall and let the building show through the name, which is why they suit a restored frontage. They are made character by character, so a long name costs accordingly. A panel with an illuminated face is cheaper, gives a single even glow and copes with a complex mark or a lot of small text, at the price of putting a rectangle on the elevation. On a roadside position out towards the port, where the sign is read at speed, the panel is usually the better engineering answer as well as the cheaper one.

How bright after dark?

Scheduled levels, and the places where a sign should not be lit at all

Brightness is set as a schedule, not as a single figure: one level for daylight, a lower one for the evening, a lower one again for the small hours, with the option of switching off entirely at a stated time. In the centre, where flats sit above shops, that night level should be conservative by default. There are also positions in this town where an illuminated commercial sign is simply inappropriate regardless of what is technically possible, and the immediate surroundings of the water tower memorial are the obvious example. It is better to say so at the design stage than to have it said to you afterwards.

When should the sign be a screen?

The test is whether the message changes

If the words on the sign will be the same in three years, a lit sign is the right product and always the cheaper one. If prices, times, offers or languages change, a display earns its cost by removing reprints and the labour that goes with them. Cross that line and the module geometry applies: the picture is built from landscape tiles of 0.32 by 0.16 metres, so a fascia of 3.20 by 0.64 metres is ten tiles wide and four high, which suits a wide shallow shopfront band better than a square panel would.

Who submits what?

Our technical annexes, your application

Rules apply to signage, and in a conservation-controlled setting they apply more tightly and involve more parties. We are not your representative in that process and we do not make promises about its outcome. Our part is the technical documentation: a scale drawing, the fixing method with the loads it puts into the wall, the mass, the current the sign will draw, its stated output and the hours it will run. Your architect or a local agent lodges the submission. Beginning that step before manufacture, rather than when the sign is already made, is the single decision that most often keeps the project to its date.

What does 400 kilometres mean for service?

Local serviceability designed in from the start

We are 400 road kilometres away, so a sign for this town is designed to be maintained without us. Gear trays are reachable, the components are standard rather than proprietary, and a spares pack travels with the sign so that an electrician you already use can change a driver on the day it fails. Fitting, travel and subsistence are shown as their own rows in the offer rather than buried in the price of the sign. Cover is a twelve-month or twenty-four-month term depending on what is built, and it applies to the manufactured assembly, not to storm damage or a fault on your own supply.
